How to backup the Windows XP registry, boot files and other system files

In preparation for a serious of tips/tricks that involve editing the Windows XP registry, here’s a tutorial that explains how to back up the registry (and other system files).

1. Start by clicking the Start button and selecting All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools and finally Backup.
2. When the Backup wizard launches, click Advanced Mode

3. Select the Backup tab and place a check in the box labeled System State. Click the Browse… button.

4. If an “Insert Disk” window pops up, just click Cancel



5. Select a location to save your backup, and enter a name for the file. Click the Save button.

6. Click the Start Backup button.



7. Depending on how many files are being backed up, this can take a few minutes. The longer you’ve had XP installed (or the more programs you’ve installed), the longer it can take.



8. When it’s done, click the Close button.



9. Find your newly created backup file. Right-click the file and select Properties.



10. Notice that it’s probably rather large. At this point might want to back the file up on a CD-R or DVD-R, rather than have it take up space on your hard drive.
