Windows

This brief tutorial will guide you in adding additional Toolbars to Windows. They can run horizontally (like the main Taskbar across the bottom) or vertically on either side of your desktop.

  1. Start by right-clicking in an empty part of the Taskbar and make sure Lock the Taskbar isn’t checked.

  3. Now right click on the Taskbar again but this time choose Toolbars -> New Toolbar…

  5. Select the folder you would like to turn into a Toolbar. My Computer is a good example.

  7. Now you’ll have a new ’section’ in your Taskbar. Click on the “dotted line”, hold the mouse button down and drag upwards.

  9. The Toolbar will ‘pop out’ of the Taskbar, and become its own window.

  11. You can customize this window by right-clicking in it.

  13. Drag the window to the right, left or top of your screen, and it will turn into a new Toolbar.

  15. The screenshot below shows that you can have the Toolbar at the top of your screen as well.

  17. There are other Toolbars you can add this way as well - the Address bar allows you to quickly enter and open web sites, the Links Toolbar allows you to store and access your favorite web sites, and the Quick Launch Toolbar allows you to create shortcuts to your most used applications.

  19. You can combine several Toolbars into one - the screenshot below displays the Address and Links Toolbars combined into one.

I’ve been a big fan of this toolbar mechanism. A great thing about it is that you can share your toolbars across multiple computers, or save them when you re-install your PC.
