How to disable the balloon tips in Windows XP

This brief tutorial will show you how to disable the annoying “balloon tips” in Windows XP.

  1. Click the Start button and select Run. Enter regedit in the space provided, and click OK

  3. Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

  5. Double click the ShowInfoTip entry and change its value from 1 to 0. Click OK and then close the registry editor.
  6. windows run dialog box with regedit

  7. Now sign out of Windows and sign back in. Ta-da! No more annoying balloon tips. If you ever want to revert back, repeat the above instructions but replace 0 with 1.

    Tooltips never bother me that much, but the actual balloon tips in the XP notification area? “Take a tour of Windows XP!” Those drive me nuts:
