Sinds ik ongeveer schreef het steunen van uw dossiers het online gebruiken Mozy (en toen OS X versie), ben ik benaderd door mensen van BackBlaze, SugarSync en heel wat anderen. Meeste negeer ik enkel nu - vaak zijn zij kleinere versies (in termen van eigenschappen, opslagruimte en kosten) van software/producten die ik ongeveer reeds heb geschreven. SpiderOak is verschillend. Op heel wat manieren. Het meest in het bijzonder, zijn zij de eerste ik waarvan ken om een cliënt aan te bieden Linux. Houd lezend voor overvloed van screenshots, opstellingsinstructies voor de cliënt Linux, en waarom ik denk zou dit de beste online opslagoplossing tot dusver kunnen zijn.
Alvorens ik in „ga hoe“ het deel, hier één of andere achtergrond en info op het bedrijf is. Eerst, zij aanbiedings GPLv3 code dat zij zich voor gebruik met SpiderOak hebben ontwikkeld, aan het grote publiek. Om het even welk bedrijf met „het teruggeven van“ houding als dat, wordt omhoog grote duimen in mijn boek. Tweede - zij bieden vrije 2GB van opslag aan. Gelijkaardig aan andere diensten ja, maar er zijn wat die geen vrije opslag, eerder een „proefperiode“ hebben. Zo als u slechts aan reserve2GB waarde van dossiers gebruikend SpiderOak wilt, zult u nooit moeten betalen. Derde - zij zijn eigenlijk dwarsplatform. Niet alleen kruisen MAC en de Vensters platform, maar MAC, Vensters en Linux (Ubuntu/Debain). En zij bieden zowel 32 als versies met 64 bits van hun cliënt Linux aan. In plaats van het hangen van een „spoedig komend“ beeld (jarenlang) in de „sectie Linux“ - zij bieden één recht van de knuppel aan. Twee grote duimen omhoog.
Op hoe deel…
- De installatie zelf kon niet gemakkelijker zijn. Volg de instructies die op de SpiderOak downloadpagina worden geschetst voor de cliënt Debain/Ubuntu. Brand op SpiderOak van Internet sectie van uw Toepassingen.
Het aanvankelijke scherm zal een uitgezochte herinnering - aanbieden De eerste Gebruiker van Time en klik Daarna.
- Ga in Captcha binnen (die één van die dingen is die zij in hebben aangeboden code sectie - Python Gimp Scripted Generatie Captcha) en klikt Daarna.
- Enter your info in the spaces provided, and once again, click Next.
- Select a user name, password, password hint (if you want) and agree to the terms. Next.
- You might have to wait a moment or two as SpiderOak confirms the user name you’ve requested is available. Once everything is ready, the Next button will become clickable, so clickit.
- At this point you’ll get a confirmation email from SpiderOak containing a link that you have to follow to enable your account. Go check your email, and verify your account.
- Now it’s backup time. The SpiderOak interface is very clear and straight forward.
- You can use some of the “pre-created” backup categories found in the left column. If you place a check in the Desktop box, the contents of your desktop will be included as a backup source.
- You can also just navigate through your files and folders, selecting what you want to backup as you go. A running tab of the size of your backup is kept and displayed in the bottom bar. Click the Save button once you’ve decided what you want to backup.
- Select the Status tab to watch what’s going on at any given time. If you opted to back up a lot of files, since this is your first back up, it might take a while.
- Once everything has completed, the Status windows will be empty.
- When you want to restore/download a file, click the View tab and navigate to your file/folder. Then click the Download button.
- Once the download has completed, you’ll be prompted to open the file/folder, go to the download folder, or close the window.
- If you go to the download folder, you’ll find your restored/downloaded file(s) there.
- When closing SpiderOak via the X in the top right-corner (or wherever your theme puts the close button) you’ll be prompted with a “warning” message. If you want SpiderOak to remain active and in the background, backing up your stuff as it’s created/added etc, click Minimize (which is my strong recommendation). If you want to really close SpiderOak (note that your files and folders will NOT continue to be backed up until SpiderOak is running again) - click Close.
- If you opt to keep it minimized, you’ll see a new little SpiderOak icon in your system menu.

This looks worth checking out, but just FYI, Jungle Disk has offered a Linux, Mac and Windows client for a couple years now.
