vid Ross McKillop Augusti 4, 2008

iPod

Om iTunes är inte listed, carry on with the next step.

    8. click to enlarge

    9. Click the Add Program… button, and see if iTunes is listed among the programs. If it is, select it and click OK Jump down to step h below. If it’s not listed, click the Browse button.
    10. Navigate to the C:\Program Files\iTunes\ folder. Select iTunes (might be listed as iTunes.exe and click Open.

    11. click to enlarge

    12. iTunes will now be listed in the Add a Program window. Make sure it’s selected, and then click OK.
    13. iTunes should now be listed in your Windows XP firewall exceptions list, with a check in the box next to it. Click OK, exit out of the Security Center and give your Remote a try again.

    14. click to enlarge

  2. Windows Vista
    1. If you’re using the built-in Windows Vista firewall, you’ll want to make sure that iTunes is an allowed exception. To do so, open the Control Panel and select the Allow a program through Windows Firewall link in the Security section.
    2. On the General tab, make sure that Block all incoming connections is NOT checked.

    3. click to enlarge

    4. Select the Exceptions tab. Make sure that iTunes is listed, and DOES have a check in the box next to it. If it’s listed, but was unchecked (and now you’ve checked it off) - click OK, close out of the Control Panel and give your Remote a try again.

If it is listed, and checked, and you’ve confirmed the previous troubleshooting steps, make sure that if you have a router and are utilizing its firewall, that the proper ports are being forwarded.

If iTunes is not listed, carry on with the next step.

    5. click to enlarge

    6. Click the Add program… button, and see if iTunes is listed. If it is, select it and click the OK button. Jump down to step g below. If it’s not listed, click the Browse… button.
    7. Navigate to the C:\Program Files\iTunes\ folder. Select iTunes (might be listed as iTunes.exe and click Open.

    8. click to enlarge

    9. iTunes will now be listed in the Add a Program window. Make sure it’s selected, and then click OK.
    10. iTunes should now be listed in your Windows Vista firewall exceptions list, with a check in the box next to it. Click OK, exit out of the Windows Firewall Settings and give your Remote a try again.
  3. Other 3rd Party firewall
  4. If you’re using a firewall provided by Norton, McAfee or any one of the dozens (hundreds?) of other firewall vendors, check with their online or built-in support on how to allow a program through the firewall. It’s iTunes.exe that you’ll want to allow. iTunes.exe is located in the C:\Program Files\iTunes\ folder. You may also/alternately need to allow TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 through - it depends on your firewall program.

  5. Hardware Router firewall
  6. If you have a router and utilize its firewall, you may need to configure it to allow Remote traffic. Remote uses TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 to communicate with your iTunes or Apple TV. See Port Forward for help with setting up your router to allow these ports.

    Thanks for that.
Unfortunally it does not work for me. I use BitDefender Internet Security 2008.
I added iTunes to my firewall exceptions, and allowed iTunes to use all ports, not just the onces you describe above.
    Still no luck unfortunally.

I get my iPhone to show up via the WiFi. I type in the code listed on my iPhone into iTunes and it doesn’t work.

I checked firewalls and everything. Is there anything else?

    3 m 08.31.08 at 3:55 pm

    Vista:
    Firewall->Exceptions->Add Port->3689 TCP
    Firewall->Exceptions->Add Port->5353 UDP

That should work. If it does not get your iPhone to show as a Device:
    start->[command line:]cmd[enter]->ipconfig /release *[enter]->start iphone remote app, go to add a new library->back to windows and->ipconfig /renew *[enter]
It should now show up, sync it, and -> exit from the prompt.

The iPhone Remote broadcasts on 5353 to let the computers on the network know it is there. When you renew the network iTunes sends out a broadcast request on 5353 and receives it, syncing the devices. But if you do not open up 5353 and 3689, then it is unable to recreate the connection.

    – Well, that is, that fixed it for me on all but one computer *sigh*

Additionally, verify that Windows Vista (or XP) is not using a HTTP proxy server. In Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings, do not have checkmark on “Use Proxy Server for your LAN”

I’m having a problem similar to a number of folks. I can get remote to connect to my iPhone and control my library for a short period of time. After I close Remote and lock the iphone Remote can not find my iTunes library and I have to re-pair the device. Remote will work for about 5 min, and then it looses connection.

Everything seems to be connected correctly, but when I look at my devices list under my device, I don’t see the REMOTE icon for my iphone, therefore I cannot put in a code… any suggestions?

Great post. I had to trouble shoot this for a while. I am on a Macbook Pro with an Airport Extreme wireless network.

    1. Make sure that iTunes is allowed through your the firewall on your laptop as discussed in the post.
    2. Make sure you are connected to the correct wireless network. Both the Macbook and the iPhone need to be connected to the same network. I was connected to my neighbors! Dumb mistake that cost me some time I will never get back :)

This is my problem and ive already seen many others with the same thing, in addittion to this i must say I at first was able of using remote perfectly but for some reason this problem started, also I have connected a friend’s ipod touch to my computer whilst mine doesn’t work (so the problem’s the ipod….)

Like many of you it took me forever to get my iPod touch to work with vista.
I saw on another site that if you repair bonjor by going to computer then to change or uninstall a program and then right clicking on bonjor and selecting repair that it will get it to work with vista and it did.

Cheers~

dude, it took me forever to get my iphone to connect to the remote. the cmd ipconfig totally worked. thanks guys!!!!

I had to manually add the port exceptions in order to get anything at all to happen with the iPhone Remote application in Windows Vista 64-bit. As soon as I added those, it immediately popped up in iTunes. No reboot or anything. Just entered the TCP and UDP ports and I saw the little remote icon appear under my phone’s listing in devices in the iTunes window which was open in the background at the time. Neat!

    18 izze 12.06.08 at 11:19 pm

I have tried all the above and still nothing, I don’t get it. How can one app be so much trouble. Nothing shows up under devices and everything is checked where it should be, what else can I do?

Hi All - Using XP, McAfee and latest firmware 2.2 on iTouch. iTouch is paired with the specific PC in my house, all settings as above… that is, ports opened and firewall exceptions all fine. I activate the remote on the iTouch and put in the appropriate 4 digit password in iTunes… then the strange bit… under the ‘add library’ on my iTouch it just keeps cycling and i can never actually access my PC. After a minute or 2 it stops and it never actually remembers the PC library.

Is it possible the library is too large? I have approx 13,000 songs. Anyone else had issues with large libraries? Any advise would be appreciated. It all worked fine and 1st go on my Vista laptop a month ago, but latest sharepod not compatible and needed to re-sync with main pc and thought I’d add the remote access too and it’s not working.

RE: In the Settings section of Remote, do you have “Stay Connected” set to
On or Off? I can only guess - but the first thing I’d try is set it to
On (the default is Off). It may be taking more than the default amount
of time to index your entire library. Again, I’m just guessing.

    Ross

…Hi Ross, Thanks for your response, but iTouch is already set to stay connected. I have tried leaving the iTouch alone for 10 minutes or more to see if it catalogs the entire library, but the timer dissapears and I’m back to squasre one again.

I was really frustated because I could not use my remote app, I was using “PC-cillin Internet security” program and that was blocking the access to my computer even though I unblock all the firewall in Windows Vista, I changed the personal firewire profile to home network in that program and Voila now it works prefectly. Thank you

Can someone help me? I have windows vista and I cannot get the remote to work from my ipod touch. I am not computer literate so if someone could walk me through it step by step that would be great. my device gives me the passcode and I enter it and as I place the last number in, the screen goes blank and it asks me for another password.
thanks - I hope someone could help me.

I already have itunes checked on firewall, the REMOTE application still shows in itunes, when connected to wifi, I enter the 4 digits, wait while it’s verifying the passcode and then nothing.. this app seems to work only with MAC???

Thanks VERY much for your work on this troubleshooting page. I was getting SOME frustrated trying to get Remote to work and two minutes on your post solved everything. Thanks again!!

    27 Rob 01.11.09 at 6:17 am

I have same problem as some others. The remote will work for about five minutes, and then it stops working. Nothing specific seems to trigger the problem. It will happen whether I stay in the Remote application, or leave the Remote application and start it again. Always about 5 minutes. Only way I can get it to work again is to close Itunes and restart it. I have Vista.

I have winxp pro, and i had the same problem. i had 2 ip addresses in my adapter. i removed the 2nd one and then it worked.

I have no clue. I’ve set up the TCP and UDP ports as exceptions on my Firewall (I’m running Tiger). My iTunes is looking for iPhone and iPod Touch Remotes, but there is no Remote icon appearing beneath the iPhone in the Devices list. I’m running out of ideas, so I’d love it if someone could give me an idea of what to do next.

I am unable to enter the 4 digit passcode coz i have no where to enter it..

    32 Dave 02.04.09 at 3:25 am

Another interesting problem. I am running an airport express connected to home hifi with a wireless router connected to PC. “Remote” application connects to PC fine except it does not showup as a device on the left hand side of the Itunes screen… however… it does work. I can access itunes from Iphone and they play out of stereo. Occaisionaly, at random intervals the remote application loses its connection with Itunes and takes sometime to recconnect, I have changed “stay connected” to yes in remote settings… but can not figure out why it loses this connection. It never did this before I installed the airport express so I am thinking it is a networking problem.

Any tips / ideas really appreciated.

    33 Danny J 02.04.09 at 8:49 am

Hi, dont know if it helps but the best way I can find for it connecting (as long as have the correct firewall settings) is to start the Remote App and then start iTunes. If I do it the other way around it cant seem to find the device. This of course brings up the problem of if it disconnects I have to restart iTunes which is annoying to say the least.
Hope it gets fixed, could be really good app

    34 Waller 02.07.09 at 8:30 pm

Fixed it…Found the problem. For xp users open up internet explorer—–tools—-internet options—–connections——lan settings——- make sure the use proxy for your lan box is unchecked! and voila!!! it works!!!! yey!!!
