When I did a dual-boot install of Ubuntu 8.04, at first I didn't get the "Guided" option when it came to disk partitioning. I went back to Windows and defragmented again, which didn't help. So I went back to Windows again and ran chkdsk (open a DOS window and type chkdsk c: /f ). It needs a reboot to run this scan as Windows comes up, which I did. When I returned to the Ubuntu install, it now gave the the "Guided" option. I selected 50% for Ubuntu, 50% for Windows, and everything went fine!

Thank you for the how-to. Most sites don't explain how to make it dual boot. For the person that did not see the option for guided partition with winxp and ubuntu, I had the same issue. Make sure all your drives are un-mounted and that you have less than 4 partition on your HD (you can use the partition utility under administration to check for that). This worked for me.

Damm you're good! ... and thank you very much all the work it took to put this guide together. I was floundering around in the internet trying to find some help for the the last five days trying to get my eee to dual boot or even to boot Linux and could not find a good guide, no offense to others who posted, but it was just all over my head, anyway your guide is really great, it works!
One thing I'd like to add is that my first memory stick even though I formatted it, just didn't work and I remember reading something about memory sticks and this kind of problem, so I tried a different one and, ... Bingo!
Please let me encourage you to keep up the great work.

Great! I just purchased a model 901 today, but it hs only 12GB. I plan on getting a 16GB SD card. Could Ubuntu be installed there, or does the system treat that storage differently?

Thanks for the timely article.
