Elisa is an open source cross-platform media center connecting the Internet to an all-in-one media player. This overview will walk you through the steps to install Elisa in Ubuntu, and highlight some of the features.
- The easiest way to install Elisa in Ubuntu (8.04 “Hardy Heron”) is to head over to the Elisa download page and click the Download Now button (or just click here).
- You’ll be prompted to install the Elisa package. Click the Yes button.
- Enter your password when prompted, and the download will begin.
- Once all the files have been downloaded, the installation will begin.
- When the installation has completed, click the Close button.
- To launch Elisa, select Applications -> Sound & Video and finally Elisa Media Center.
- If you have a bit of an older setup, you’ll get an error about your graphical hardware not being configured to support 3D software. At this point you may want to look into updating your video card to use the latest drivers. The Ubuntu Community Documentation “Video” section is a great place to start.
- If you didn’t get an error, Elisa will launch in full-screen. Use the arrow keys to navigate from section to section. Hit Enter on your keyboard to select a specific feature/app.
- The Audio feature allows you to browse your music collection by Artist, Album, Folder or Volume.
- By default you won’t see a lot when you’re playing a song - but you can quickly access the volume, play/pause button etc.
- You can use the “Return to menu” button in the upper-right corner, or hit the esc key to move back to the menu.
- Videos will have a small thumbnail next to them, and a larger one on the side.
- Even while watching a video, you can return to the video menu and navigate through your other files.
- Elisa also supports a number of plugins that allow you to access sites and services such as Flickr, DailyMotion, YouTube, Picasa and Shoutcast, from directly within Elisa. You can even setup your Wii controller to use as a remote with Elisa.

The ubuntu version isn’t running well…. I can’t add a new folder inside those media center. I need to index the NTFS drives(DATA) first to play the music and they’re no options to add a new watch folder. And do you any idea what’s the gear icon for?? i cannot click it..

To get a remote working with Ubuntu you need to first install LIRC. You can search with google and find the LIRC homepage which has a howto. Also on the ubuntu forums there are a lot of posts on this subject. I managed to get my snapstream RF remote to work with Mplayer, Xine, and as a mouse in Gnome.
