This tutorial will show you how to stop iPhoto from launching each time you plug in your iPod Touch (or iPhone, or any device with a camera) – and still allow iPhoto to automatically launch when you plug in your digital camera.

The application Image Capture was recently updated to include much awaited functionality – the ability to choose which application launches – or none at all – when you plug in a specific device. This means that you can set your digital camera to automatically launch iPhoto when it’s plugged in, but have nothing happen when your iPod Touch is plugged in.

To set your preferences by device, follow the instructions outlined below.

  1. Launch Image Capture by going to your Applications list and double-clicking it. With no devices (cameras, scanners, iPods, iPhones etc) connected, it will look similar to the screen below.

  2. Now plug in a device (or three, as I have in the image below). Select that device from the DEVICES menu in the left column. Now choose an action for that device by selecting the Connecting this xxxxxx opens: drop-down list. In the case of my camera, I want iPhoto to launch when it’s plugged in.

  3. Now select (or plug in) another device. In the example below, I don’t want anything to happen when I plug my Android phone in, so I selected No application from the drop-down list.

  4. And I repeated the above step for my iPod. Note: iTunes will still launch when you plug an iPod or iPhone into your Mac if you have that preference set in iTunes itself.

  5. That’s it! Now you can have individual settings per device.

Game Concept: Color squares for points against several opponents in this turn-based board game.

The Good

Simple rules create deep gameplay: Move one adjacent square horizontally or vertically and turn the vacated square your color. Jump two squares horizontally or vertically, and all adjacent squares turns your color. Tap your current square to jump to a random, empty square. You can only move to open squares that haven’t been colored yet. Moving a single square turns out to be rather defensive, while jumping is required to grab territory. But if you can jump to a particular square, so can your opponent, and as a result, seemingly awesome moves can be undone not soon after.

You can have up to four players set to either human or computer opponents. The game is a lot more fun with four players and defaults to this mode.

The Bad

Sub-par graphics: your primary piece is happy face, the animation of squares changing color is blocky, and the screens surrounding the game are rather simplistic.

Wish pieces could move diagonally.

Conclusion

Although My Squares’ graphics aren’t that impressive, there’s a refreshingly compelling strategy game lying just beneath the surface. I’ll be playing this one for a while. The game is available for the iPhone and iPod touch for $0.99 from the App Store.

In Diner Dash you help Flo wait tables at an increasingly busy restaurant. Seat customers, take orders, serve food, and bus tables as efficiently as possible. Taking too long at any task creates unhappy customers, who just might leave in frustration.

The Good

  • Solid game play: tasks overlap in just the right amount to create tension, but never get so crazy so that you have no idea what’s going on.
  • Some nice touches improve gameplay: small hearts beneath customers indicate their happiness, Flo can hold two items at once (orders, dishes to be served, bused plates), and customers arrive in a variety of party sizes and preferred seating which add to the challenge.
  • Extras add variety: different customer types with varying patience, restaurant improvements based on the money you earn after each level, and various strategies to placate annoyed diners (drinks, entertainment).

The Bad

  • The hand drawn, cartoony graphics are cute but feel cramped: there’s wasted space on the left side of the screen, the tables and service counter feel prohibitively small, and improvements made to the restaurants after each level don’t look terribly special.

Conclusion

Mediocre graphics hamper solid gameplay, but ultimately the game itself trumps the presentation. The original price of $10 was very steep, but it’s currently on sale for $4.99.

Pano is a fantastic iPhone application for taking panoramic photographs. It’s from the folks at Debacle Software. From the looks of it it’s a very simple application with just two buttons, but don’t be fooled by that. It is very useful and great fun to use.

One of the things I like most about Pano is how far the developers have taken the idea of simplicity. There are no fancy buttons to do just about everything you want to do. The application seems to have been designed to be simple to use, and so it ships with only two buttons. I think it’s smart design.

When you launch Pano on your iPhone, it asks you to take a few pictures. You need to take six pictures for Pano to be able to stitch them into a single panoramic photograph like the one you can see below. Once it has stitched the photographs it drops it into your iPhone’s photo album. During the process of clicking the six pictures if you want to retake a particular photograph you can do so. The result is something like the image below.

As you can see the result is quite spectacular, and even more so considering it was taken using a cellphone. There’s a handy FAQ if you have any questions about Pano.

You can find panoramic photographs taken by people using Pano which they have uploaded to share on this Flickr group. Pano 2.0 costs just $2.99 and will run on any iPhone with the 2.2 or better firmware. And if you are even a little interested in photography I would definitely suggest you give Pano a shot.

This brief tutorial will show you how to determine how much data you’ve used on your iPhone’s wireless data plan.

Though some mobile providers allow unlimited data usage, if you live in Canada you know full well that some do not. Canadians have to be very careful how much data they use on their iPhone’s to avoid huge overage fee’s.

  1. Start by selecting the Settings button on your iPhone’s springboard.

  4. Finally, on the Usage page check the Cellular Network Data section. This will show how much data you’ve sent and received. You’ll need to add the two numbers together to get your total usage. It’s a good idea to set a reminder in your iPhone’s calendar to reset the usage (tap the Reset Statistics button) at the beginning of each billing cycle (which you can find on your cell phone bill or from your mobile provider).

  1. When a user adds a site to their springboard by using the Add to Home Screen feature, by default, the iPhone or iPod touch will use a thumbnail of the visible part of the page being displayed in Safari.

If you’d like your site to have a much nicer icon appear on the springboard when people add it, create a 57px by 57px PNG icon, name it apple-touch-icon.png, and upload it to the root folder of your site. Note: Apple themselves actually use a 129×129px icon, so you may want to experiment to see what size looks best for yours (it will scale to the default iPhone/iPod touch springboard icon size).

    If you don’t have access to the root folder of your site, or you’d like to put the icon elsewhere, add the following line to the <head> of your site:

    <link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="/path/to/file.png" /> (and upload the file.png to that folder).

  3. Now when someone adds your site, it will have a nice icon associated with it.

If you’re having problems setting up the Remote software for the iPhone and/or iPod Touch, follow the steps outlined in this tutorial and you should be up and running in no time.

Remote allows you to control iTunes from your iPhone or iPod Touch. I’ve found quite a few folks have mentioned in the comments section of a previous tutorial on the subject that it doesn’t work for them. The following troubleshooting tips should get it working.

  1. Network
  2. iTunes Settings
  3. Firewall

Network

Your iPhone/iPod Touch must be on the same network as the computer running iTunes. Remote does not work over Edge or 3G. The PC or Mac running iTunes doesn’t need to be connected via Wi-Fi, but your iPhone or iPod Touch must be connected to the same network.

iTunes Settings

Make certain that your iTunes is actually looking for the Remote. To do so, open the iTunes Preferences and select the Advanced tab. From there, make sure that the box labeled is checked.

Firewall

iTunes must be allowed through any software (or hardware) firewall that you may be using. I’ve provided the steps for the built-in firewalls included with Windows XP and Windows Vista, and some suggestions for other software and hardware firewalls.

  1. I use the Windows XP firewall

  3. I use another 3rd party firewall
  4. Hardware Router firewall
  1. Windows XP
    1. If you’re using the built-in Windows XP firewall, you’ll want to make sure that iTunes is an allowed exception. To do so, open the Control Panel and select the Security Center.

    2. In the Security Center, select the Windows Firewall link from the bottom of the page.

    3. On the General tab, make sure that Don’t allow exceptions is NOT selected.

    4. Now select the Exceptions tab. In the list, make sure that iTunes is listed, and DOES have a check in the box next to it. If it’s listed, but was unchecked (and now you’ve checked it off) – click OK, close out of the Security Center and give your Remote a try again.

      If it is listed, and checked, and you’ve confirmed the previous troubleshooting steps, make sure that if you have a router and are utilizing its firewall, that the proper ports are being forwarded.

      If iTunes is not listed, carry on with the next step.

    5. Click the Add Program… button, and see if iTunes is listed among the programs. If it is, select it and click OK Jump down to step h below. If it’s not listed, click the Browse button.

    6. Navigate to the C:\Program Files\iTunes\ folder. Select iTunes (might be listed as iTunes.exe and click Open.

    7. iTunes will now be listed in the Add a Program window. Make sure it’s selected, and then click OK.

    8. iTunes should now be listed in your Windows XP firewall exceptions list, with a check in the box next to it. Click OK, exit out of the Security Center and give your Remote a try again.

  2. Windows Vista
    1. If you’re using the built-in Windows Vista firewall, you’ll want to make sure that iTunes is an allowed exception. To do so, open the Control Panel and select the Allow a program through Windows Firewall link in the Security section.

    2. On the General tab, make sure that Block all incoming connections is NOT checked.

  3. Other 3rd Party firewall

    4. If you’re using a firewall provided by Norton, McAfee or any one of the dozens (hundreds?) of other firewall vendors, check with their online or built-in support on how to allow a program through the firewall. It’s iTunes.exe that you’ll want to allow. iTunes.exe is located in the C:\Program Files\iTunes\ folder. You may also/alternately need to allow TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 through – it depends on your firewall program.

  4. Hardware Router firewall

    5. If you have a router and utilize its firewall, you may need to configure it to allow Remote traffic. Remote uses TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 to communicate with your iTunes or Apple TV. See Port Forward for help with setting up your router to allow these ports.

  2. Tap Set up your blog to get started.

  3. Enter the relevant info in the appropriate fields.

  5. A list of your recently published posts (and scheduled posts) will be listed.

  6. Tap the “write new post” button in the bottom right corner to create a new post for your blog. Start entering info. Tap the Categories and you’ll be presented with a list of all the categories you’ve previously created.

  7. When you create the actual post, the screen changes to give you more room to work with. Tap the Save button in the upper-right corner to save your post.

  8. By default, your post will be saved as a Local Draft – which means it’s on your iPhone/iPod Touch – not on your blogs server – yet.

  9. Tap the Status: field and you can publish, save as a draft (on the server) etc.

  10. Tap the Preview button from the bottom list, and you’ll get a preview of your post (the yellow fields are AdSense ad locations).

  11. Tap the Photos button from the bottom list and you can add a photo to your post. Tap Take Photo with Camera if you have an iPhone and want to add a ‘live’ photo, or Add Photo from Library to add a picture from your iPhone/iPod Touch photos.

  13. but when I tried to save it, I got an error (I don’t use the wp-content/uploads/ folder, and it has specific permissions set).

  14. All in all it’s a very neat app that will come in handy for creating quick posts. I don’t think I’d want to try and write a particularly long post using it mind you.

Here’s another reader requested tutorial – how to take screenshots using your iPhone or iPod Touch (with the 2.0 firmware, non-jailbroken) and how to access them.

  1. With the 2.0 firmware, Apple has actually made it quite easy to take screenshots with your iPhone or iPod Touch. Just hold down the bottom button, and click the top one. Note: be sure to see the tip in step #5

  2. You’ll see the screen “flash” quickly – that means it has taken the screenshot.
  3. Click the Photos icon on your iPhone or iPod Touch and your Photo Albums will be listed.

  4. Select the Saved Photos album. All of your iPhone/iPod Touch screenshots are stored here.

  5. TIP: as soon as you ‘hold down’ the bottom button, you’ll return to your springboard (the ‘home’ screen). If you want to take a screenshot of an open program (or anything other than the springboard) you have to click quickly. Try clicking both buttons at the same time. I’ve found that to be the easiest way to get screenshots without returning to the springboard – like the ones in my brief review of Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D.

This tutorial was created in response to several emails I’ve received on the subject. It’s another one of those “obvious, but easily overlooked” topics.

  1. To change the order of the icons on your iPhone or iPod Touch home screen (often referred to as the springboard) – tap and hold down any one of the icons. After holding down the icon for a couple of seconds, all of your icons will start to “wiggle”, and the applications that can be removed – generally those you have installed from the App Store – will have small X’s in the upper-left corner.

  2. While the icons are wiggling, tap and hold down the one you want to move, and drag it to whatever location you want.

  3. Repeat step #2 until you’re happy with your springboard layout. When you’re done, click the “bottom” button on your iPhone/iPod Touch.
