How to create and use Smart Folders in OS X

A recent blog post regarding Smart Folders in OS X caught my attention. I remember looking at Smart Folders a few days after I got my Mac and getting the basic gist of it, then never giving them a second thought.

Now I’ve thought of a way to use Smart Folders that would actually be helpful - so I’ll outline the entire process of making them.

1. To create your first Smart Folder, start by selecting File and then New Smart Folder



2. Since I’m always saving, creating and editing images - and I’m not very good and keeping them organized - I’m going to use my first Smart Folder to help me locate recent images.

3. First I’ll select the ‘top level’ location for my Smart Folder to ‘look’ for files in. Because I never save files outside of my Home (remember, your Home includes your Desktop, Documents, Pictures and more) - that’s the location I’ll choose. From the Kind menu I chose Images and from the Last Modified menu I chose This week.

4. Click Save and give your Smart Folder a name. If you think this is is something you’ll frequently use, make sure there’s a check in the box labeled Add To Sidebar



5. Now your Smart Folder is ready for use - in my case I’ll be able to easily find images that I’ve recently modified.
