How to install IE 5, 5.5, 6 and 7 in OS X

by Ross McKillop on November 22, 2007

Internet Explorer Mac

Using the package ies4osx combined with Darwine 0.9.49, you can install and use IE 5, 5.5, 6 and even 7 (though it’s in beta) while running OS X. This tutorial assumes you have X11 installed on your Mac - if you’re using Leopard, it’s installed by default. If you’re using Tiger, you can find the installation instructions here. And it’s worth mentioning up front - Darwine requires that you have an Intel powered Mac.

IE running in OS X

  1. First things first, install Darwine 0.9.49 (if it isn’t already).
  2. Now download the install file for ies4osx. Once the download has completed, run it.

  3. Select the versions of IE that you want to install, and then click the small ‘arrow’ to begin.

  5. You’ll notice that the X11 icon will pop up in your dock. That’s normal.

  7. ies4osx will start to download all of the required IE files.

  13. And view sites in IE while running OS X.

Why anyone would want to install IE on any Mac is beyond me.

    Carl,

Web designers and developers. Sadly they still have to keep IE in mind when designing and creating web sites.

Thanks for this info. Now I can put off installing Windows on my Mac for yet another day.

Need some help here. I keep getting this when I try to install in Leopard 10.5.4

IEs4Linux 2 is developed to be used with recent Wine versions (0.9.x). It seems that you are using an old version. It's recommended that you update your wine to the latest version (Go to: winehq.com).

    # IEs4Mac will:
    - Install Internet Explorers: 6.0
    - Using IE locale: EN-US
    - Install MS Core Fonts
    - Install everything at: /Users/Mark/Applications/IEs 4 Mac/.ies4mac
    [ OK ]
