There are literally hunders of video conversion tools for Windows. The ones that have the most friendly user interface almost always cost money. The ones that are free can be a bit more complicated to use. Hamster is a fantastic combination of the two – it’s easy to use and it’s free! This tutorial will guide you through the 3 steps to convert video formats on your Windows PC.
Before you get started, download and install Hamster. The installation is about as straight forward as it gets. Once completed, launch Hamster.
First up, add files to convert. This is can be done by simply dragging and dropping files or adding them manually using the Add files button. A large number of video formats are supported and once a file is added it can be previewed in the preview pane on the right of the file add section.
Other details about the video such as the compression type, video bit rate, resolution, frame rate, audio channels etc. are also visible in the preview pane.
Now you’ll need to select the output format of video conversion and settings to go along with it. Numerous video formats – AVI, MPEG, WMV, FLV, MP3 etc. are supported and conversion settings can be customized according to the device on which the video will be played. Output destination folder can be setup, codec quality, audio codec quality can all be customized as desired. There is a lot of flexibility available to you – trial and error with shorter videos is the best way for you to determine the settings that work best for you.
After you’ve set all of your conversion preferences, simply click the Convert button.
This will start the conversion process, which may take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, depending in large part on the size of the video you are converting. The larger the file and/or longer the video, the longer it will take to convert.
Once the conversion process has completed, give the new video a watch. That’s it!
