This guide will explain how to remove the ‘Suggested Content/Articles’ section from the “new tab” page in Chrome for Android or the iPhone/iPad.
When you open a new tab in Chrome for Android or Chrome for iOS, by default the Google ‘home page’ will include a section of suggested articles from around the web. Many people find this section a distraction – so we’re going to show you how to get rid of it :)

SE,
It's almost certainly one of those ntp entries. Does one of them contain the word 'articles' or 'suggestions' ?
Did not get it to work. My flags screen looks different but I disabled the two top ones that say ntp. Still get the articles. Latest chrome (Android, tablet) updated 3/11/18.
