How to Automatically Sign in to Ubuntu

This guide will show you how to configure Ubuntu to automatically sign in each time you start up your computer.

Please note: if you’re using Ubuntu on a laptop/computer that doesn’t stay within your residence, or you’re even a tiny bit concerned that someone might use it without your permission, do not enable automatic login as it’s a huge, gigantic security risk. But if you’re the only one that has access to it and/or don’t care if someone can view everything on your computer, by all means enable the automatic login feature :)

1. Start by clicking the All Applications button in the bottom left corner of your screen.
2. Choose Settings from the list of Applications.
3. First select Users from the column on the left side of the window, and then click the Unlock… button at the top of the window.
4. Enter your password when prompted and then click the Authenticate button.
5. Toggle the switch next to Automatic Login to the right so that it’s “on”.
6. The next time you restart your computer you’ll automatically sign in to Ubuntu, without having to enter your username and password. That’s it!
