Requirements

– a Mac running the latest version of macOS
– a USB thumb drive at least 8GB in size
– an .ISO image of Windows 10, which you can download here if needed
– a valid Windows 10 registration key
– some time and patience – it takes somewhere between 1-3 hours to complete the process, depending on the speed of your Mac, download speed etc.

Preparing Your Mac for Boot Camp

There isn’t a whole lot that you need to do to get ready to install Windows on your Mac via Boot Camp. While it’s very unlikely that you’ll have any problems, it’s still critically important that you perform a backup first. Time Machine is certainly good enough. After you’ve made a backup, decide how much hard drive space you want to allocate to Windows and make sure you have free space to cover it, and still have plenty left over for macOS. Finally, run through the list of requirements just to make sure you’ve got everything you need, and then get started installing Windows :)

Install Windows via Boot Camp

Open the Boot Camp Assistant app, which you can find in your Applications -> Utilities folder.

Click Continue on the initial setup screen.

Place check marks in the boxes next to both Create a Windows 10 or later install disk and Install Windows 10 or later version and then click the Continue button.

Now you’ll need to select the “up and down arrows button” – it’s the one to the right of the Choose a Windows ISO file… (see screenshot below).

Navigate to your Windows 10 ISO file, select it, and then click the Open button.

Now select your USB thumb drive from the list in the Destination disk: section. Make sure not to select one of your other external drives (if you have any) as it will be erasing everything on the drive you select. Click the Continue button when you’re ready.

Your USB thumb drive will now be erased…

and then the Book Camp Assistant app will start copying over Windows files.

The process may take some time, if you wanted to grab yourself a cup of coffee or tea now would be a good time.

Once the thumb drive has been set up you’ll be asked to decide how much hard drive space you would like to allocate to Windows. “Click and drag” the small bar between the two sections (macOS and Windows) until you’ve decided how much space you want to give to Windows and how much you want to leave for macOS. The final partition that Windows uses may be slightly smaller than you set here – that’s normal.

After you’ve made your selection click the Install button. The Boot Camp Assistant will partition your hard drive to make room for Windows and eventually your Mac will restart.

This time when it boots up, you’ll find yourself in Window. Select the language you want to use, time and currency formats, type of keyboard or input method and then finally click the Next button.

Enter your Windows product key in the space provided and then click the Next button.

If you’re prompted, select the version of Windows that your key is valid for and then click the Next button.

Place a check in the box labeled I accept the license terms and then, you guessed it, click the Next button.

Select the partition that includes the word BOOTCAMP (and make sure it’s approximately the size that you wanted it to be back in step #10). Click Next.

Now you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy that tea or coffee. Eventually, your Windows installation will finish up and you’ll go through the steps to setup Windows 10.

Finishing Up

After Windows boots for the first time you’ll be prompted to install the Boot Camp installer. It’s super-easy – you’ll just click a “Next” button a few times and then reboot. Although you’re undoubtedly tired of going through installation and setup wizards, it’s very important to go through this one too. If for any reason the Boot Camp installer doesn’t run automatically, just follow these steps.

When your Mac starts up you can choose which Operating System you want to use by holding down the Option or Alt key and when the Startup Manager appears, use the up and down arrow keys to choose either Windows or macOS.

To change the default operating system – the one that starts up automatically without you holding down the Option key, just follow the steps in this guide.

This short guide will show you how to customize the macOS System Preferences so that only the items you use on a regular basis are displayed.

After 10 major versions of OS X/macOS, you can finally customize the System Preferences! It’s quick and easy to do and will save you from having to scan through a lot of icons to find the one you want each time you open the System Preferences. Here’s how –

Click the Apple icon in the menu bar and select System Preferences…

You’ll be presented with the System Preferences that we all know and love.

Now try clicking View and then select Customize…

Remove the check marks from the boxes of items that you do not want to see. Click the Done button when you’re done. Note: you will still be able to access these items, easily, they just won’t be displayed here in the main System Preferences window.

Ta-da! A much smaller and more manageable version of the System Preferences.

You can always access each of the System Preferences, hidden or not, by clicking View and selecting it.

If you’re looking for some other cook ways to customize your Mac why not try setting a web page as your Desktop background or accessing your files and Apps via the Menu Bar?

This step by step guide shows you how to give permission to a friend or family member to share your iCloud Drive storage space so they can save and access their own files on it.

Here’s a scenario for you – you’ve got an iCloud+ account (a paid iCloud subscription) and your friend doesn’t. They’re running low on their free 5GB of iCloud storage space and desperately needs more (and probably getting constant emails from Apple telling them their iCloud storage is almost full). Why not share some of your extra space with them? Although Apple refers to this as “Family Sharing” – there’s absolutely no reason you can’t share your iCloud storage with a friend, roommate, co-worker or other acquaintance.

Following the steps outlined below you’ll be able to grant permission for a friend, roommate, co-worker OR family member to use your iCloud storage space to save their own photos and data. It’s very important to note that no, they will not be able to access your iCloud data and you will not be able to access theirs.

From the official Family Sharing guide by Apple,

Everyone’s personal files and preferences stay private. When you share iCloud+, family members can’t see each others’ photos, files, or documents.

For the sake of this guide we’re going to use an iPhone to complete all of the required steps. You can do this on an iPad and the steps will be almost identical. You can also do it on your Mac via the Family Sharing icon in the System Preferences and while though steps are quite different, you should still be able to follow along.

The first step is to setup Family Sharing itself. This is an Apple feature/service that allows you to share various services and subscriptions with “family” members (remember – that can include friends, roommates, co-workers etc). Although there are lots of things you can share, we’re only going to cover iCloud storage – feel free to check out all the other options and settings once you’re done.

Start out by tapping the Settings icon.

Select your Profile (directly below the word Settings).

Choose Family Sharing from the list of options.

Tap the + Add Member link.

A Invite People to Your Family window will appear – select the Invite People button inside of that window.

If the person is right next to you with an iPhone/iPad you can use AirDrop to send the “invitation” link, otherwise tap the Mail icon.

Enter the email address of the person you want to allow to use your iCloud storage space, and give the email a subject (or enter a short message) so they know why you’re sending a long and slightly strange looking link.

When the person you invite opens the link in the email they’ll be invited to join your “family” – tell them to tap the Join Family button.

Then they just have to tap the Done button and that’s it – they don’t need to do anything else.

Now that your friend is a member of your “family”, you can share your iCloud storage with them. Once again open your iPhone/iPad Settings and select your Profile.

Choose Family Sharing again.

This time scroll down to the MORE TO SHARE section and select the iCloud+ option.

When prompted, tap the Share iCloud+ With Family button.

That’s it. Tap the Close button.

Now return to Family Sharing – this time you’ll see a new section titled SHARED WITH YOUR FAMILY and inside of it an item named iCloud+ – select it.

From here you’ll see a list of the people using your iCloud storage (iCloud+) and how much space each person is using.

After you’ve given your friend permission to use your iCloud storage, they can return to their iCloud settings and see that the amount of usable storage space has increased to whatever your plan includes. You’re a good friend!

In addition to via your iPhone/iPad, you can manage friends (users) via the System Preferences on a Mac. I’m not sure why you can’t manage users via the web, for now it’s via iOS and macOS only.

This guide will show you step by step how to setup the free version of OpenDNS to both speed up and secure your Internet browsing.

There are a slew of reasons to use OpenDNS, but the big 3 are:

1. Websites will load faster and you won’t have to worry about DNS outages from your ISP.
2. There are more than 50 customizable categories for content filtering which means OpenDNS lets parents control what websites their children visit.
3. OpenDNS automatically blocks phishing websites that try to steal your identity and login information by pretending to be a legitimate website.

There are a couple of ways you can protect your devices with OpenDNS – at the router level, or at the device level. If you add OpenDNS to your router, that means all of the devices that connect to your home network will be protected by and using OpenDNS. Or you can add OpenDNS on a device by device basis (eg. just the kids computers and tablets). We’ve got you covered either way with instructions on how to setup OpenDNS on a router, in Windows and in macOS.

Add OpenDNS To A Router

There are hundreds and hundreds of different makes and models of routers. We’re going to provide general instructions on changing the DNS servers on a router, but for the specific steps on your make/model, you’ll need to refer to its website/documentation. OpenDNS offer instructions for various types of routers on their page which may also help.

Open your browser and enter the routers IP address into the address bar. For most home routers it’s https://192.168.1.1 – if you’re not sure what it is check its documentation or find your router on the OpenDNS page.

Enter in the user name and password to access your routers configuration settings. Look for a section titled something along the lines of DNS settings – and enter in the following IP addresses in the DNS server fields:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

In all likelihood there will be a “Save Settings” (or similar) button – make sure to click it.

Then you should see a message similar to this one letting you know the changes have been set. Click Continue.

To verify the settings were successful you should have a section in your router where it shows the status.

In order for the devices that are currently connected to your network to use OpenDNS they’ll need to re-connect. Restart one of them and then on that device check to make sure OpenDNS is working. That’s it! :)

Setup OpenDNS in Windows

Click the Windows Search button (or use the keyboard combo Windows key + S to open the Search panel) and enter the word network in the search box. Select View network connections from the list of results.

Locate your current Network Connection (probably Wi-Fi) and double-click it.

Click the Properties button.

Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) by clicking on it once, and then click the Properties button.

Select the Use the following DNS server addresses: option, and then enter 208.67.222.222 as the Preferred DNS server: and 208.67.220.220 as the Alternate DNS server:

Click OK and close out of the other open windows. Now all you have to do is check to make sure OpenDNS is working!

Setup OpenDNS in macOS

Open your System Preferences and select Network

Select your active Internet connection (probably Wi-Fi) and then click the Advanced… button.

Choose the DNS tab and then click the small “plus sign” ( + ) button located below the DNS Servers: section.

Enter the address 208.67.222.222, click the “plus sign” button again and add 208.67.220.220 as well.

Click on one of the two DNS servers you just added and drag-and-drop it to the top of the list of DNS servers. Then do the same thing with the other DNS server you just added so that they’re the first two addresses listed.

Click OK to return to the Network Preferences and then click the Apply button on that screen. Now all you have to do is check to make sure OpenDNS is working!

Make Sure OpenDNS is Working

To ensure OpenDNS has been properly added to your router or device, go to the Welcome to OpenDNS Page. You should see the following screen if everything was configured correctly:

Here’s how –

Please note: even though the screenshots used in this guide are from a Mac, the entire process is identical whether you’re using Windows, Linux or macOS.

Head over to the TuneMyMusic home page (link opens in a new tab/window) and click the big Let’s Start button.

This short guide explains how to resolve the error “Can’t find Xcode install for Metal compiler. Please install Xcode and run Xcode.app to accept license or ensure active developer directory is set to current Xcode installation using xcode-select” when trying to install Unreal Engine on your Mac.

Fortunately the fix is very easy, although it does involve a fairly large download (12+GB). Just follow these few steps –

Open the macOS App Store and search for Xcode. Once you find it, click the Get button to start the installation process.

Once the installation has completed, launch Xcode and accept the terms of the License Agreement. Then quit Xcode.

Now open a Terminal from your Applications -> Utilities folder and issue the command:

sudo xcode-select -s /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer

You’ll be prompted to enter your password before the command will execute. Once it has, exit out of the Terminal.

Now open UE again.

This time it will launch without the “Can’t find Xcode” error and start to compile various parts of the app, which will take a moment or two. Otherwise, you’re done!

This short guide will show you how to configure Microsoft Edge so that it always starts in InPrivate Mode in macOS.

If you surf the web using Microsoft Edge when it’s in “InPrivate mode” that means none of your browsing history, download history, cookies, cached files or passwords are saved when you quit the app. Browsing in InPrivate mode doesn’t keep you safer online, but it does help keep your private information a bit more private.

In order to have Edge automatically start up in InPrivate mode on your Mac you’ll need to create something that’s kind of like a “fancy shortcut”. Fortunately, it’s super easy to do – here’s how –

Launch the Script Editor, which you can find by going to your Applications folder and then the Utilities folder.

Click the New Document button when the Script Editor app opens.

Enter the following line of text into the top panel:

do shell script "open -a /Applications/Microsoft\\ Edge.app --args --inprivate"

Save the file by selecting File and then Save…

Give the file a name (something descriptive) in the Save As: field. The one name not to use is “Microsoft Edge” – anything else is fine. Select your Applications folder as the save the file. Finally, select Application from the File Format: menu. Click Save when you’re done.

Check your Applications folder and you’ll find a new app. Before we test it out, let’s get rid of the ugly icon first.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block; text-align:center;"
     data-ad-layout="in-article"
     data-ad-format="fluid"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-5859953828663601"
     data-ad-slot="8016768772"></ins>

Hold down the control</strong key and click your app. Select Get Info from the menu.

Take a moment to download an icon file from macOSicons to use with your new copy of Edge. Once you’ve picked one out and downloaded it, drag-and-drop it onto the existing small icon in the upper-left corner of the Get Info panel (see screenshot below).

Confirm that the icon changed.

Quit any open instances of Microsoft Edge and then double-click your newly created custom app. Ta-da! Edge will open in InPrivate mode. Every time you open Edge via the new app it will open in InPrivate, as long as there aren’t any currently running instances of the browser. That’s it! You can update Edge as you normally would when updates become available and just leave the version you created as it is.

This short guide will show you how to set a web page as your Desktop background using a fantastic little open-source app for macOS.

Using the app Plash you’ll be able to customize your desktop background like never before. There are quite a few features that make this app capable of a lot more than just displaying some static HTML on your desktop. You can add custom CSS and JavaScript to the website, interact with it, automatically reload the site at a specified interval, and much more.

Something to note right up front – the latest version of Plash requires macOS 11.3 (Big Sur) or later. There is an older version that works with 10.15, though not all features are supported. To install the older version just download and open the .zip file, drag-and-drop it to your Applications folder and then open it from there (and skip the first two steps in this guide).

Otherwise, start at step #1 below and we’ll go through a bunch of examples of ways to use Plash.

Start by visiting Plash on the App Store, which will launch the App Store app. Click the GET button to start the installation process.

Once it’s done, click the OPEN button.

A ‘Welcome’ screen will appear. Give it a read and then click the Continue button.

Let’s jump right in and start using Plash. Click its icon from your menu bar (the new one that looks like a “splashing droplet”) and select Add Website… from the list of options.

For the sake of trying out the app, we’ll add one of the “really cool but not necessarily useful” sites to use as a desktop background first – WindowSwap. Enter the address: https://www.window-swap.com/Window in the provided space, and give it a name (doesn’t really matter what, something descriptive is helpful). Then click the Add button.

Ta-da! Your desktop background will turn into a random video looking out of someones window.

You may have noticed a small Websites panel appeared once you added the first site to Plash. Ignore it for the time being – we’ll get to it in a minute or two.

Once again click the Plash icon in your menu bar and select Add Website… from the list of options.

This time enter the address: https://bing-photo-of-the-day.netlify.app and hit the tab key on your keyboard. After a moment or two, the name should auto-populate to something like “Bing Photo of the Day for Plash” – once it does, click the Add button.

This time your desktop background becomes the full-screen Bing Photo of the Day!

Now that you’ve added two sites to Plash, you can switch between them using the menu bar icon. Click it and select Switch and you’ll see both of the sites we just added.

Plash has some pretty advanced features that you can use to take the “web page as a desktop” thing to the next level. Once again click the Plash menu bar icon, select Add Website… and enter: https://calendar.google.com then click the Add button.

Your desktop will switch to the Google Calendar sign-in page, which can be quickly fixed.

Fortunately you can interact with the web page you’ve set as the desktop. Click the Plash icon from the menu bar and select Browsing Mode

Plash will display a message that explains Browsing Mode – after you’ve read it click OK to close the window.

Click inside of the Email or phone field and sign into Google Calendar the same way you would as if you were using a normal web browser.

There it is! Your Google Calendar will now be displayed as your desktop background.

You’ve probably noticed it doesn’t look… awesome. Here’s where some of the advanced Plash magic comes into play. Using a bit of code provided by the author of Plash, you can make the calendar look amazing by blending into the background with your normal desktop wallpaper (see screenshot below).

Remember that Websites window we looked at briefly way back at step #7? Bring it up by selecting the Plash icon in your menu bar and then Websites… from the list of options. Hold down the control key and then click the Google Calendar entry. Select Edit…

From here you can add custom CSS or JavaScript to the web page being displayed on your desktop. Start by placing a check in the box labeled Use print styles (Note: this option requires macOS 11). Next up, copy and paste the following text into the CSS: field then click the Done button.

* {
background-color: transparent !important;
color: white !important;
}

.QQYuzf,
.gboEAb,
.Hrn1mc {
display: none !important;
}

[role="grid"] * {
}

Ta-da! Your Google Calendar now looks much cooler.

If you still have Browsing Mode enabled you can interact with your calendar the same as if it were being displayed in a web browser.

Of course that can get really annoying too, so just select the Plash icon and then Browsing Mode again.

You may also want to review the various settings and options – to do so, click the Plash icon and select Preferences…

This tutorial provides step by step instructions on how to resize the dimensions of video files using completely free and open source software for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Please note: the steps and screenshots in this guide are from HandBrake running in Windows. The steps are similar enough (though not identical) for the macOS and Linux versions of HandBrake that you should have no trouble at all following along, even if you’re not using Windows.

Get started by downloading HandBrake and installing it. The app itself isn’t very big and doesn’t take long to download or install. Once the installation has completed, launch HandBrake.

Now you’ll need to load the video that you want to resize. To do so, click the File – Open a single video file. link.

Select the video and then click the Open button.

Once the video has been loaded into HandBrake, select the Dimensions tab.

Locate the Size section – this is where you set the dimensions you want the video to have. Make your changes to both the Width: and Height: numbers by using the up/down arrows next to each item. Make sure to maintain the same aspect ratio or the resulting video will looked ‘squished’.

Confirm that the Output: lists the Display size with your newly set dimensions.

Feel free to review the other encoding options that HandBrake offers, if you’d like. They have great documentation, and the app itself has a lot of features. This step is not mandatory, and the default settings will probably suit your needs. Plus, you can always make changes and try again if you’re not happy with the result the first time.

Finally, give your new video a name and choose a location to save the file in the Save As: field at the bottom of the window. Click the Start Encode button when you’re ready.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block; text-align:center;"
     data-ad-layout="in-article"
     data-ad-format="fluid"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-5859953828663601"
     data-ad-slot="8016768772"></ins>

The status of your encode will be displayed at the bottom of the HandBrake app window. The larger (file size) and longer the video is, the longer this process will take. You may want to go grab yourself a cup of coffee. Of course, you can continue to use your computer while HandBrake does its thing – it’ll just be a bit slower.

Once HandBrake is done resizing the video, open up a File Explorer and locate the newly created file. Select it and then click the Properties button in the ribbon or right-click the file and choose Properties from the context menu.

Click the Details tab and locate the Video section on that screen. Confirm that the Frame width and Frame height are set to the correct, new dimensions.

Open the file in your favorite video player and confirm it looks the way it should etc.

That’s it! You’re all done.

HandBrake is a super helpful tool you can use for much more than just resizing videos, like converting videos to play on your iPhone or iPad and copying DVDs to play on your phone, tablet or computer.

This tutorial explains how to access your Google docs (and all of the files on your Google Drive) from within Microsoft Outlook, so you can send them as attachments etc.

Overview

This process used to be a bit more complicated, but Google and Microsoft seem to have decided to play nice. Now it’s actually pretty easy to quickly attach your Google Docs files to an email in Outlook, although the process is a bit different depending on which version of Outlook you’re using. We’ve got you covered for each scenario though – with instructions for Outlook in Windows, Outlook in macOS and via Outlook.com.

Attach Google Docs From Outlook in Windows

By installing Google Drive for Desktop, a completely free app from Google, you can access your Google Drive files and folders right from within Windows. One of the cool features of Google Drive for Desktop is that you don’t actually have to store all of those files on your computer as well as on your Google Drive, although you can select files to make available offline if you want. Another cool feature is that it integrates directly into Outlook, which is how we’ll be using it.

Before you do anything, exit out of Outlook. Just for a few minutes. Then download Google Drive for Desktop. Once the download has completed, double-click the file to launch the installer.

The setup process takes about a minute in total and when it’s done you’ll have a new “drive” – your Google Drive. You can view it by opening a File Explorer and looking at the drives listed in the This PC column.

Now open up Outlook again. The first time you open it after installing Google Drive for Desktop you’ll be asked if you’d like to use Google Meet – you can click the X in the upper-right corner of the panel. If you do want to use Meet, you can always set it up later.

Click the New Email button to bring up the “Compose a new email” window. In the “Ribbon” you’ll see two new buttons – click the one named Insert files using Drive

Select Insert as Attachement

Choose your newly added Google Drive.

Locate the file you want to send as an attachment, select it and then click the Open button.

The file will appear exactly the same as any other attachment.

When the recipient receives the file it will appear exactly as any other email attachment, with no indication that it was actually attached via Google Drive.

That’s it! For more information on Google Drive for Desktop, check out the article What can you do with Google Drive for desktop.

Attach Google Docs From Outlook in macOS

By installing Google Drive for Desktop, a completely free app from Google, you can access your Google Drive files and folders right from within macOS via the Finder. One of the cool features of Google Drive for Desktop is that you don’t actually have to store all of those files on your Mac as well as on Google Drive, although you can select files to make available offline if you want. Outlook & Google Drive for Desktop the macOS versions aren’t quite as tightly integrated as the the Windows versions are (no comment), but the functionality is identical. Here’s how to attach Google Docs files to emails in Outlook for macOS –

Start by downloading Google Drive for Desktop. The installation only takes a minute or two, but a reboot is required at the end, so make sure to save any open work before you proceed.

After you’ve rebooted, open up a Finder window and look in the Locations section of your Sidebar – you’ll find a new item named Google Drive. It contains all of the files on your Google Drive, but they are not stored locally, so they’re not taking up any space.

Launch Outlook and compose a new email as you normally would. Click the Attach File button.

Choose your newly added Google Drive and select the file you want to send as an email attachment.

It will appear as an attachment in your email the same way any other file would – even though it’s actually from your Google Drive.

The recipient won’t be able to tell that the file has come from your Google Drive either, it’ll appear the same as any other attachment.

This tutorial explains how to confirm or “match” the MD5 hash of a file in both Windows and macOS, without the need to download or install any software.

Background

Here’s a a very elementary explanation of what MD5 hashes (sometimes called MD5 checksums) are. From Wikipedia –

… MD5 has been employed in a wide variety of security applications, and is also commonly used to check the integrity of files. … An MD5 hash is typically expressed as a 32-digit hexadecimal number.

What does this mean to you? On many download pages, the software company/programmer will provide a 32 character “MD5 hash” or “MD5 checksum”. After you download the program or file, you can compare it’s MD5 hash with the one provided by the source. If they match, you’ll know that you have the correct, unaltered version of that file.

Once upon a time you needed to download and install an app in order to generate the MD5 hash of a file in Windows or macOS. Fast forward to today and now both Windows and macOS have the ability to generate MD5 hashes built right into the operating system. The instructions for Windows are directly below, and you can click here or just scroll down for the section on generating an MD5 hash in macOS.

How to Match an MD5 Hash With a File in Windows

Click the Search button in your taskbar and enter the word command. When Command Prompt appears in the list of results, select it. You can also open a Command Prompt by clicking the Windows “Start” button and scrolling down to the Windows System folder and then select Command Prompt

Enter the following partial command but do not hit enter yet.

certutil -hashfile

Now open a File Explorer window and locate the file that you want to check. Drag that file onto your Command Prompt window and let go.

Confirm that the line now reads like this:

certutil -hashfile C:\path\to\file.xyz

Finally, add the characters md5 at the very end of the command, which should now look like this:

certutil -hashfile C:\path\to\file.xyz md5

Hit enter or return on your keyboard to run the command. After a moment or two the 32 character MD5 hash will be generated and displayed inside of the Command Prompt.

Now compare that 32 character string with the actual MD5 hash provided by the software company. Assuming they match up, you can rest assured that you’re using the exact copy of the file that was provided by the company/author etc.

That’s it! Repeat as needed to generate the MD5 hash of any file on your computer.

How to Match an MD5 Hash With a File in macOS

Launch a Terminal by navigating to your Applications folder, then the Utilities folder, and then open Terminal.

With a Terminal window open, enter the command: md5 followed by a ‘space’. Do not hit enter/return yet.

Open a Finder window and locate the file that you want to check. Drag and drop that file onto your Terminal.

Confirm that the command now looks like this:

md5 /path/to/the/file

Hit return on your keyboard to run the command. After a moment or two you’ll be presented with the 32 character MD5 hash for that file. Compare that code to the official one to ensure that the files are identical.

That’s it! Super easy and you can do it with any file you wish.

This short guide will explain how to type French characters with an accent aigu (é), accent grave (è), circumflex (ê) and more, on your Mac, iPad or iPhone.

The easiest way – and this works on Macs, iPhones and iPads – is to tap the letter that you want to accent and hold the key down. After a moment a ‘pop-up’ bubble will appear and you can select the accent you wish to use. On your Mac, when you hold the e key down, a pop-up will appear and you can select from one of 7 different accents for the e key. To select the accent, just click on the one you want to use, or tap it’s corresponding number (in this case, 1-7)

On your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, when you hold down a key a series of options for that key will appear. As illustrated in the screenshot below, when you hold down the letter e a menu will appear with options for the e key.

Another option for typing French characters on your Mac is to use the option key.

To type an accent aigu, hold down the option key and tap the letter e (an apostrophe-looking character will appear temporarily) . Then let go of the option key and tap the letter e again. This time an e with an accent aigu (é) will replace the apostrophe.

Using the option key to type an accent grave is a bit different. Hold down the option key and tap the ` key. Let go of the option key and this time tap either a, e or u – depending on which letter you want to use the accent grave with.

Typing an accent circonflexe is a bit like an accent grave – hold down the option key and tap the i key. Let go of the option key and this time tap either a, e, i, o or u – depending on which letter you want to use the accent circonflexe with.

To type a tréma use the same method as a circonflexe but replace the i key with the u key.

One final way to type characters with accents is to use the Characters Viewer (it’s called just Characters in older versions of OS X/macOS) – the same one that you can use to “type” emojis.

This guide will show you how to remap any of the keys on your Mac keyboard using a free and open source app for macOS.

Karabiner-Elements is a “powerful and stable keyboard customizer for macOS”. It lets you remap keys (change keys to other keys) and more advanced things like changing the caps lock key to control+option+command. Check out the full list of features here. You’ll need to be using macOS 11.0 (Big Sur) or 10.15 (Catalina) to use Karabiner-Elements.

This guide will show you how to install Karabiner-Elements and remap keys on your Mac keyboard.

Download the .dmg from the Karabiner-elements home page. Open it up and run the installer file, Karabiner-Elements.pkg. Once the installation has completed, run Karabiner-Elements.app from your Applications folder.

The first time you run Karabiner-Elements you’ll have to grant it a bunch of permissions, but this is a one-time only thing. Click the Open Security Preferences button when macOS tells you a System Extension has been blocked.

Click the ‘lock’ icon in the bottom left corner of the window and enter your password when prompted. Then click the Allow button next to the message System software from application “.Karabiner-VirtualHIDDevice-Manager.app” was blocked from loading.

Next you’ll be presented with a Input Monitoring Permissions Alert window – click the Open Security & Privacy System Preferences button.

If the ‘lock’ icon is locked again, click it and enter your password. Then place a check in the box labeled karabiner_observer (it may be karabiner-grabber, see next step).

You’ll be prompted to repeat the above two steps with karabiner-grabber as well, unless that was the one you did first – in which case you’ll need to place a check next to karabiner_observer this time.

With all of that out of the way, you should now be at the Keyboard Setup Assistant screen. Click the Continue button.

In order for the app to determine which keyboard layout it’s working with, you’ll need to tap a couple of keys. The first one is the key directly to the right of the Shift key on the left side of your keyboard. On a standard ANSI keyboard (US, Canada & others) that’s the z key.

The next key you’ll need to tap is the one directly to the left of the Shift key on the right side of your keyboard. On a standard ANSI keyboard (US, Canada & others) that’s the ? (or / ) key.

Once Karabiner-Elements has determined which keyboard you have, click the Done button.

Now the main Karabiner-Elements window will appear – this is where you’ll configure your keyboard mappings. Let’s remap a key (you can always delete it later). Start by selecting the Simple modifications tab and then click the Add item button.

Pull-down menus will appear in the From key and To key columns. Click the one in the From key column.

A big list of all the keys on your keyboard will pop up. Select the key that you want to change the behaviour of.

For this example I’m going to change my Right Shift key to a return key – because I often accidentally tap it instead of the return key, and I never use it otherwise.

You can test out the changes you make by going back to your Applications folder and launching Karabiner-EventViewer.app from there.

You’ll need to grant it permission to receive keystrokes, so click the Open System Preferences button and do so.

Once you give it permission you’ll need to restart it, so click the Quit & Reopen button.

Click inside of the Text input test field box and test out your newly remapped key.

Now you know how to remap keys on your Mac’s keyboard!
