Your Joy-Con isn’t limited to playing Nintendo Switch games – you can use it with your computer, iPhone or iPad and yes – your Amazon Fire. With that said, it’s important to know up front – not all games will support an external controller (Joy-Con or otherwise). The good news is that there are a lot of games that do, and they’re even more fun when you use a Joy-Con or Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. Follow these steps to pair your controller with your Amazon Fire:

1. If your Switch is anywhere nearby, make sure it’s turned off. Otherwise your Joy-Con or Pro Controller will continue to try and connect to it instead of your Amazon Fire.
2. On your Amazon Fire, tap the Settings button.



3. Tap the Connected Devices item.



4. First make sure that Bluetooth is turned on, and then select Pair new device



5. Grab a Joy-Con and press the “bluetooth” button (sometimes called the SYNC Button) located in between the SL and SR buttons (see image below). If you’re using a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, the bluetooth button (SYNC Button) is right next to the USB connector.



6. Back on your Amazon Fire take a look at the Available devices section – you should see a new entry titled Joy-Con (L) or (R) – select it.



7. The Joy-Con and the Amazon Fire will now pair.



8. After a moment or two, the Joy-Con will appear in the Currently connected list.



9. The Bluetooth icon will also appear in your Menu Bar.



10. Now you’re off to the races! (bad pun intended).

While we’re on the subject of Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons, did you know you can update them? Keeping them updated helps with game compatibility, battery life and adds other new features as they’re introduced.

As you’ve probably noticed, when there’s an update for the Nintendo Switch you’ll be notified each time you start playing a game. However, when there’s an update for the controllers (called Joy-Cons) you don’t receive any kind of notification at all. That means you have to manually check to see if there’s an update for them. Follow these steps to update the Nintendo Switch controllers.

1. Start by making sure your Nintendo Switch is connected to the Internet.
2. Go to your Nintendo Switch “Home Screen” and select the System Settings button.



3. Scroll down the column on the left side of the screen and select the Controllers and Sensors item.



4. Locate the Update Controllers option in the Controllers and Sensors section and select it.



5. Your Switch will now check to see if there are any updates available for the Joy-Cons. If there is, it will automatically download and apply the update.



6. Once the process has completed select the OK button. Depending on the update, your Nintendo Switch may restart.



7. That’s it! You’re now using the latest software for your Joy-Cons.

Note: if you came here to try and fix a problem with your Joy-Cons (probably “drift”) and updating the software didn’t resolve the issue, head over to the Joy-Con repair page on Nintendo.com and start the process to have Nintendo fix them for you.

If for some reason Nintendo won’t fix them for you, or you don’t want to wait for them to do it – you can repair them yourself (I did!) using a repair kit from Amazon and a helpful YouTube video. It’s remarkably easy to do even if you have no previous experience repairing stuff like this (if I can do it you can too).

GPU-Z supports NVIDIA, AMD, ATI and Intel graphics cards so chances are very good it’ll correctly identify your exact video card. It works on all modern versions of Windows (from XP to 10) and both 32bit and 64bit versions of Windows.

1. Head over to the GPU-Z download page and download the Standard Version. Once the file has finished downloading, double-click it. That’ll bring up the initial installation screen which will ask if you want to install the App, if you want to just run it, or if you want to run it but the next time you double-click the file, ask if you want to install it again. Choose that last option, Not now – which means GPU-Z will run right now and if you decide you like it and want to keep it around, the next time you run the setup file you’ll be asked if you want to install it.



2. Ta-da! That’s it. GPU-Z will auto-detect your video card and display the results in a series of very detailed series.



3. One of the very best things about GPU-Z is how easy they’ve made it to find out exactly what each of these fields really means. Simply hover your cursor over the field you’re curious about and GPU-Z will display a pop-up with more information on that particular section.



4. Select the Sensors tab at the top and you’ll be presented with a bunch of real-time Sensor stats.



5. Select the Advanced tab at the top and you’ll be presented with a whole bunch more info :)



6. Click the pull-down menu at the top of the Advanced tab and you guessed it, more info.



7. You can review the settings for the GPU-Z App itself by clicking the ‘three lines’ icon (see screenshot below) in the upper-right corner of the App.



8. Review the info but any changes you make you may have to make again – remember that right now you’re running GPU-Z in “standalone” mode and need to install it the next time you double-click the setup file that you downloaded way back in step #1.



9. That’s it!

1. Start out by downloading installing Steam Tile via the Windows Store. It’s incredibly small so both the download and installation should be very quick.



2. Once the installation has completed, if the App doesn’t launch on its own, start it via its entry in your Start Menu



3. There isn’t very much to configure, but it does require a bit of info. To start, click the link in the bottom right corner of the Steam Tile App which will take you to your Steam Account settings.

4. From here you’ll need to create (if you haven’t yet) a Custom URL for your Steam Profile. Enter whatever name/string-of-text that you want to use, and then copy it to your clipboard (select the text so it’s ‘highlighted’, right-click it and select Copy).



5. The other thing you’ll need to confirm is that your Profile is set to Public so that the Steam Tile App can retrieve the info. To do so, locate the link to My Privacy Settings within your Steam Profile and select it. Make sure that My profile: is set to Public



6. Now head back to the Steam Tile App, right-click inside of the blank box next to the http://steamcommunity.com/id/ “URL” and select Paste. This should have pasted your Steam Custom URL name into the next box. Assuming it did, click the Update button.



7. Steam Tile will now pull all of your Steam Games into a window. Click one of the games you want to create a Tile out of.



8. Click the Yes button.



9. Review the “tip info” if you want, and then click the Close button.



10. Now click your Start button and take a look at your first new Steam Game Tile!



11. As you’ll see, it’s a ‘live’ tile – so it will rotate/flip/animate and display your game stats etc.



12. One thing you’ll almost certainly want to do is resize some of the Steam Game Tiles (they look much better when you do). Right-click any of the tiles and select Resize -> Wide



13. The only ‘drawback’ to this App (if you can call this a drawback) is that when you click the Tile itself, the Steam Tile App will open first, then the game will launch. Sure it would be nicer if the game just launched, but you can thank Microsoft for that. But the game does launch, and the Steam Tile App is so tiny it doesn’t take up any significant amount of system resources etc.

Head over to the game download page here. Download the .zip file, extract it and run the setup file. During the installation you’ll be provided with the option to choose which games you want to install. Simply remove the check mark from the box next to each game you don’t want to play.

Once the installation has completed you’ll find a new Games section in your Start Menu, with all of the newly installed Microsoft games.

That’s it – kiss your productivity goodbye! :) Update: Thanks to helpful reader Davin for his comment (see below). These games may be removed when you update Windows, so keep the installer file handy or bookmark the download page.

This guide will take you each and every step of the way through installing and setting up this amazing screensaver. It works in Windows Vista, 7, 8 and 10. It works in OS X “El Capitan” (10.11) – though I’m not totally clear on how far back it works. Unless you’re using a shockingly old Mac, it should work just fine. Special note for Mac Users: you can also check out our Best Of: Mac Screen Savers 2015 Edition for some other pretty cool screen savers, though none top this one :)

The steps and screenshots in this guide are specific to Windows 10 but are nearly identical for previous versions. Mac users should be able to follow along, and we’ll include as many ‘tips’ for you along the way. Let’s get started!

1. Head over to the UberNES download page (link will open in a new window/tab) and download the .zip file specific to your Operating System. Once the download has completed, unzip the file.



2. Copy or move the Nintendo Saver.scr file to your (C:) > Windows > System32 directory. If you’re using an older version of Windows, you may not have a System32 folder. If that’s the case, copy it to your (C:) > Windows > System directory.

   Mac Users: Unzip the file and double-click Nintendo Saver.saver to install the screensaver.



3. Open up your Control Panel and select Appearance and Customization.

   Mac Users: Open your System Preferences and then select Desktop & Screen Saver



4. From the Personalization section, select Change screen saver



5. Click/tap the Screen saver menu, and choose Nintendo Saver 2015



6. Once Nintendo Saver 2015 has been selected, click/tap the Settings… button.

   Mac Users: Select Nintendo Saver and then the Screen Saver Options… button.



7. From the General tab, click the … button in the Movie folder: column (see screenshot below).



8. Now you’re going to select a folder to store all of the files that the screensaver needs in order to function. If you have a folder that you already store your Nintendo game .rom files in, use that one. If you don’t know what a .rom file is, don’t worry – we’ll get to that later. For now, just select or create a folder for the files.



9. Click the Download… button in the Movie folder: column



10. The Online Movie Gallery window will open. Click the Download all movies button. Note: don’t be deterred or worried about disk space – the files are very small.

11. When prompted, select the folder you created back in step #8, and click OK



12. All of the Nintendo ‘movie’ files will begin to download.

13. Once completed, click the Close button.



14. Now it’s time to download some .ROM files – the actual games themselves, as they are not included in the screen saver itself. Head over to RomsPedia and hunt down your favorite Nintendo games. You’ll probably have to endure a lot of ‘clicking around’ – but the games are there. Each game (.rom file) will be zipped – so unzip the .rom file and move/copy it to the directory with all of your other Nintendo screen saver files.

Once you’ve downloaded, unzipped and copied enough games – click the Create… button in the Game List: column. Note: you can always add more .rom/game files later. All you have to do is repeat this and the next 3 steps again.



15. Yet again you’ll be prompted to select a folder. Use the same one.



16. When you’re prompted to name and save the “Game List” file, give it a name (doesn’t matter what) and then click the Save button.



17. Click OK after your Game List has been successfully created.



18. Almost at the fun part! Click OK to close the Nintendo Saver 2015 Settings. Note: after you’ve tested everything to confirm it’s working, you’ll want to return to these Settings and customize them to your liking.

19. The moment of truth: click Preview



20. A “wall of games” will be displayed (see screenshot below). Now the fun begins. Each video represents a game you have installed. As those videos play, you can use your keyboard to interact with them. Use the Up, Down, Left and Right arrow keys on your keyboard to move the red cursor from game to game.

    To “jump into” any of the games, hit the F3 button on your keyboard (Mac Users: use the 3 key on your keyboard).

21. As soon as you jump in, you actually begin where the movie left off. If you want to go back to the beginning of the game, hit the F1 button (Mac Users: hit the 1 key). To control the game, your keyboard is matched to each Nintendo game controller button. The Up, Down, Left and Right arrows on your keyboard correspond to the controllers ‘pad’. The A and S keys represent the B and A buttons on the controller. The Enter key represents the Start button, and the Right Shift key (the shift button on the right side of your keyboard) represents the Select button. NOTE: if you move your mouse/cursor or click any of the other buttons on your keyboard – the screen saver turns off and you’re back at your desktop.

22. Before you go back and look at the other Settings you can change, you may want to change the default time your screen saver kicks in.



23. Have fun! Thanks to this screen saver, I put off writing this overview for 2 days, so be warned :)

1. Download Atari Greatest Hits directly on your iPad from the iTunes App Store. The app is free and comes with Missile Command.

2. After it’s downloaded launch the app and you’ll be greeted with graphics from the old school arcade machines. Also, a message showing that you get Missile Command for free and can purchase 3-4 games for $0.99 or get all of 99 for $14.99.

3. Click OK to the message and tap on the Quick Play icon to start playing Missile Command right away. Adjust the Sensitivity then tap on Play.

4. Then start playing the nostalgic Missile Command game. Controls are basic and easy to use.

5. You can scroll through the games offered by the arcade machine graphics the tap Buy or get more Info on them.

6. You can browse by individual titles and recently played games.

7. It also allows you to browse games by the original Atari game cartridge boxes…which is really brings back memories!

8. You can change different settings for the entire app as well, including music volume, game effect volume, and more.

Atari Greatest Hits for iPad is a lot of fun and really brings back memories. The cool thing is the app is free and comes with Missile Command, but for additional games you will need to make in app purchases. A couple other caveats is it only runs in Portrait Mode and there is no Pac-Man! But overall it’s a lot of fun and you can get your retro gaming on while waiting in line or sneaking in some game play at work.

Note: You can add an external drive to the Xbox 360 Slim 4 GB model, however, you can only use up to 16 GB of the space. So, if you were to add a 160 GB external drive for example, you’ll only be able to use 16 GB of it for Xbox storage.

1. For this example we’re going to hook up a 16 GB flash drive since that’s the limit. If you don’t have one, they’re incredibly inexpensive on Amazon. Insert the flash drive into an available USB port on the back of the Xbox Slim. Turn on the Xbox and from the main menu, navigate to My Xbox -> System Settings

2. Then in System Settings select Memory.

3. In Storage Devices select USB Storage Device

4. Xbox will need to configure the USB flash drive so it’s compatible for data storage. Select Configure Now

5. On the Configure Device screen select Yes when it asks if you want to remove all content and configure it for Xbox storage.

6. Then wait while your Xbox tests and configures the flash drive. In our tests it took under a minute.

7. After it’s done go back to your flash drive or Memory Unit as it’s called in the menu.

8. Now here you can see it’s ready to use to store data.

9. A quick test to make sure it works is to start up a game from your collection. For example here we started playing BioShock, and when the game started it asked where to store game progress, and were able to select the USB flash drive.

10. After playing it for a bit, we created a new save point, and when you go back in to look at your drive, you should see the that it was stored on the flash drive.

Using a flash drive versus an external hard drive is a good idea to get extra storage space for the Xbox 360 Slim. This way you won’t need to mess with more wires and an extra piece of hardware cluttering up your gaming area. You can use an external hard drive as well, but just keep in mind that you’ll only be able to use 16 GB of space.

Note: your Playstation 3 will need to be connected to the Internet for this tutorial to work.

1. The first step is to update your Playstation 3 to the latest version. To do so, select Settings from the main PS3 Dashboard, then System Update. If you’re already up to date it will say so, and you can proceed to step #2. If you need to download and install an update, do so now. Once the update has been applied (and this often requires you to restart your PS3) – proceed to step #2.
2. Navigate to the Video category on your PS3 Dashboard. From that menu, select Netflix.

3. Press the X button on your controller to install the Netflix app on your PS3.

4. Select OK to confirm your PS3 was purchased in the US or Canada.

5. Confirm that you want to download and install the Netflix app by selecting Yes.

6. The Netflix app will now download and install.

7. Now select Netflix from the Video menu on your PS3 Dashboard.

9. If you’ve previously used the ‘old’ method to watch Netflix movies on your PS3 (using the Netflix disc) – you won’t be asked to sign in to your Netflix account. Otherwise, you’ll need to enter your authentication credentials (user name and password).

2021 Update: although this guide is 10 years old, it’s still accurate! The screenshots will look slightly different, but on the whole – it’s still the same. With that said, you may want to look into Plex as a streaming server – your PS3 will be able to connect to it and it’s much more feature rich than the software outlined in this guide. Plus, it’s free too – and it works in macOS, Windows and Linux.

This tutorial will show you how to install and setup Vuze, which is actually a bittorrent client. We’ll be using as the ‘streaming server’ on your Mac – which your PS3 can connect to and then play on your TV.

1. Before you get started, turn on your PS3, and make sure it’s connected to your local network. Then head over to your Mac.
2. Now download Vuze. Open the .dmg file, and then run the Vuze Installer.



3. Place a check in the box labeled Customize, and then click the I Agree button.



4. Once the installation has completed, launch Vuze if it doesn’t open on its own.
5. Here’s where it gets important. In the left column/window, click the Turn On button in the Devices section.



6. Before you click the Turn On button, decide if you want to share anonymous device statistics with Vuze. If you do, leave the box checked. If not, remove the check mark. Then click the Turn On button.



7. The files required for streaming from your Mac (via Vuze) to your PS3 will now be downloaded and installed.



8. Now it’s time to add videos to Vuze, so that you can stream them to your PS3. Locate a few videos / movies and drag them from Finder to the PS3 icon in the Devices list of Vuze.



9. You’ll be prompted to choose either PS3 HD or PS3 SD. HD is high-definition, SD is standard-definition. I have always opted for PS3 HD and never had a problem (and the videos look great).

10. Your videos will now be added to the Vuze PS3 library. Some video types will need to be converted to a format compatible with the PS3. XviD files, one of the most popular video formats, do not need to be converted. MKV files however, do. As you can see in the screenshot below, the file Apollo 13.mkv needs to be converted, and is going to take approximately 7 hours and 24 minutes. The time it takes to convert videos that need converting is based on your Mac’s speed and the size and type of the video file being converted. Once you have a few videos added, move on to the next step.



11. Head over to your PS3. From the Dashboard move to the Video section. If you see a Vuze on [your Macs name], skip down to step #19 below. Otherwise, continue with the next step.



12. Select Search for Media Servers from the Video category of your PS3’s Dashboard.



13. Give it a few minutes to run…



14. … and at least one media server should be found. Return to the Video section.



15. Now select Vuze on [your Macs name].



16. Select the Movies folder.



17. Scroll through your videos, and select one to watch/test.



18. The video should start streaming after a moment.



19. That’s it – you’re done! As long as Vuze is running on your Mac and it’s on the same local network as your PS3, you’ll be able to access it from your PS3.

One of the features that Microsoft built into Windows 7 and the Xbox 360 was the ability to stream audio and video (movies, tv shows, music, podcasts etc) from your PC to your Xbox. Here’s how you do it –

1. Start out by launching Windows Media Center on your Windows 7 PC. Make sure you’ve added some movies, music, pictures etc.

2. Leave Windows Media Center open on your PC, and head over to your XBox 360. Turn it on, and when you get to the Dashboard, select My Xbox and then Windows Media Center.

3. Select Continue and then click the A button on your controller.

4. Head back over to your PC. You’ll see a little pop up window telling you that a Media Center Extender has been found. Select the Set Up Now button.

5. If you have content currently playing in Windows Media Center, you’ll be asked to stop it first. Select Yes.



6. Select the Next button on the initial setup screen.

7. Back at your XBox 360, an 8 digit code will be displayed. Write it down and select Continue. Once again head back over to your PC.

8. Enter that code in the spaces provided. Select Next.

9. Windows Media Center will continue to go through the installation.

11. A little pop-up confirmation window will appear once the installation has completed.

14. Note: it’s worth mentioning – to playback some types of files you may need to install additional ‘Media Updates’ on the Xbox 360. They’re very straight forward to install – you usually just have to download the update and follow the on-screen instructions. Then whatever media you were trying to play, will play.

15. That’s it! You can now share all the movies, tv shows, music and pictures between your PC and Xbox 360.

1. It’s actually quite simple, although I wish it was more clearly explained on the Netflix Help Site. You need to adjust the time and date settings on your Playstation 3, Wii or other Netflix streaming device.
2. To do this, select Settings from the Playstation 3 dashboard, and scroll down to Date and Time Settings.



3. In my case, the year was off by one (2011 instead of 2010).



4. From the Date and Time Settings menu, select Set via Internet.



5. You should get a confirmation that the date and time set were completed. And the date and time will now be correct :).



6. Now run the Netflix disc again – and this time the process will go through smoothly, and you’ll be watching movies/TV shows in no time!
7. If you’re not using a PS3 and are experiencing this error, make sure the Time and Date settings on your device (Wii, Boxee Box etc) are set correctly.

Using Windows Media Player – which comes built in to Windows 7, you can stream (most of) the videos from your PC to your TV via your PS3. I say “most of” because the PS3 can only play certain types of video (full list here). With that said – most of the common video types are supported. So just follow these steps and you’ll be streaming your videos to your PS3 in no time.

1. Open Windows Media Player on your PC. Make sure you have at least a couple of videos in your Videos category in the left column.

   Select Stream from the menu bar. If you don’t see Automatically allow devices to play my media… in the list of options, please skip down to step #3 below right now. Otherwise, select Automatically allow devices to play my media….

2. In the window that pops up, select Automatically allow all computers and media devices. Now jump all the way down to step #7 below.

3. Select Turn on media streaming….

4. When a confirmation window appears, click the Turn on media streaming button.

5. Give your media library a name in the space provided. Leave all of the other settings with their default values and click the OK button.

6. Now select Stream again from the menu bar. Confirm that Automatically allow devices to play my media… is selected (that there’s a check next to it).

7. Power on your PS3 and make sure it’s connected to the same network that your PC is. From the dashboard select Video, then scroll down to Search for Media Servers and select it.



8. Wait a moment or two while your PS3 checks for media servers on your network.



9. Now you’ll be notified that a media server was found.



10. From the Videos list, select your newly found Windows 7 Media library.



11. Choose one of your videos, and select it.



12. All of the standard video controller options are available – fast forward, rewind, pause etc.



13. If you have .wma video files in your collection, you’ll need to enable your PS3 to play them. To do so, go to Settings on your PS3 dashboard and then System Settings.



14. From the System Settings menu, select Enable WMA Playback.



15. After you select Enable WMA Playback you’ll get a confirmation message. Now you can stream .wma files to your PS3 from your PC.



16. That’s it – you’re done!
