This quick guide will show you how create a Spotify playlist that automatically updates each time you find a new song on Shazam.

Have you ever discovered a great track using Shazam only to completely forget that you discovered it in the first place? Following the steps in this guide, you can configure Shazam to create a playlist and automatically update it every time you find a song using Shazam. Let’s get started!

Open Shazam on your device but instead of tapping the ‘big button’ to listen for a song, tap the My Shazam icon in the upper-left corner of the window.

This time tap the “cog” icon (see screenshot below) in the upper-left corner of the window.

Now you’ll need to authorize Shazam to be able to update Spotify – so tap the CONNECT button in the Spotify row.

Tap OKAY when prompted.

Once the authorization has completed, you’ll be notified with a little pop-up window. Tap GOT IT to close that window.

Go check out your Spotify App – there’ll be a new playlist titled My Shazam Tracks and that playlist will be updated each time you discover a new song.

At this point you’re all done. But while we’re on the subject of automated Spotify playlists… Did you know you can have one that automatically updates each time you like a video on YouTube? :)

This tutorial will walk you every step of the way through installing, setting up and using SyncMate to sync your Windows Mobile device with your Mac.

2021 Update: the software utilized in this guide no longer supports Windows Mobile. SyncMate 4 was the last version that supported Windows Mobile, and is no longer available for download from the Eltima site (I couldn’t find it…)

Though SyncMate isn’t new, they’ve just released a version with a long awaited feature – the ability to sync using a locked Windows Mobile/Pocket PC device. The free version of SyncMate is limited to only syncing your Contacts and iCal calendar (and Google Contacts and/or Google Calendar) – but that’s more than enough for me. It’s also worth mentioning that you can also use SyncMate to mount your Windows Mobile device as a drive in OS X – and browse/transfer files to and from your Mac/device. Keep reading for the full walk-through.

Head over to the <strike>SyncMate download page</strike> NOTE: site no longer appears to include ability to download SyncMate 4, which is the last version that worked with Windows Mobile.

Open the SyncMate .dmg file and double-click Eltima SyncMate.pkg to begin the installation.

You’ll be prompted to confirm that it’s OK to include software that determines if it’s possible to install software. Yep. Click Continue.

There isn’t much to see on the Introduction screen, so click Continue.

Review the info in the Important Information screen, and click Continue.

Review the info in the Software License Agreement (yawn) and yet again, click Continue.

Since it wasn’t enough to get you to click Continue on the previous screen, now click Agree.

Unless you want to change the installation location (probably not a great idea), click the Install button.

When prompted to enter your password, do so, and click OK.

Once the installation has completed, you’ll need to restart. Save any open work, exit out of any open programs, and click the Restart button. Your Mac will reboot now.

Once your Mac starts again, navigate to the Applications folder and double-click SyncMate to launch it.

Place a check in the Don’t show this warning again box, and then click OK.

Plug your Windows Mobile device into the USB cable, and plug the cable into your Mac. A semi-transparent CONNECTING… window will appear.

In SyncMate, click the Connect button. A message will appear on your mobile device saying that USB drivers are being installed, and once the installation is complete, click Done (on your device). If the Connect button doesn’t trigger the software to install on your mobile device, click it again. For me, it didn’t work until after the 3rd time I clicked Connect.

Once your mobile device is connected to SyncMate, select Contacts from the Plugins menu on the left side of the window. From here you’ll set how you want to synchronize your contacts. The choices are Mac <-> Mobile device (two-way syncing), Mac -> Mobile device (contacts will be updated on your mobile device from your Mac, but contacts on your mobile device will not update on your Mac) and Mobile device -> Mac (contacts will be updated on your Mac from your mobile device, but contacts on your Mac will not update on your mobile device).

If a conflict occurs, you’ll probably want to leave the default (Ask Me) – but you can also set SyncMate to always use your Mac as the “source of truth”, or always use your mobile device as the source.

If you have multiple groups of contacts, you can opt to only sync one group. To do so, place a check in the box labeled Synchronize only this group of contacts. Select that group by clicking the … button.

Choose the group you want to sync, and then click OK.

If you’d like to sync your Google contacts, place a check in the box labeled Sync with Google contacts. Click the Google login info button. Enter your Google user name and password in the spaces provided, and place a check in the box labeled Save password (unless you want to enter your password each time you sync your Google contacts). Click OK.

Now that you’ve setup your contacts syncing preferences, select iCal from the Plugins menu on the left side of the the SyncMate window. Similar to how the contacts sync works, select how you want your Synchronization direction to work (two-way, update from Mac only or update from mobile device only). Again decide how you want to resolve conflicts (Ask me is probably ideal).

If you have more than one calendar, click the … button.

Select the calendar you want to sync with your mobile device, and click OK.

If you’d like to sync your Google calendar, place a check in the box labeled Sync with Google calendar. Click the Google login info button. Enter your Google user name and password in the spaces provided, and place a check in the box labeled Save password (unless you want to enter your password each time you sync your Google calendar). Click OK.

You’re finally ready to perform your first sync. Click the Sync now button in the upper-right corner of SyncMate.

The first sync can take a while, depending on how many contacts and calendar events you have on your mobile device and/or Mac. You’ll know it’s actually working by the “spinning circles” next to Contacts and iCal.

If more than 5% of the info on your computer or mobile device is changing, SyncMate will “warn” you. If you’d like to see the details of the changes, click the Show Details button. Otherwise, just click Sync.

Your contacts and calendars on your Mac and mobile device will now be in sync. One other feature of SyncMate is Mount disk. This allows you to browse, upload and download files on your mobile device from your Mac. To do so, click the Mount disk button.

You’ll get a warning message saying that this feature is in beta and may have glitches/bugs. Place a check in the Don’t show me this warning again box and then click OK.

You can now view and transfer files on your mobile device, from Finder.

Once you’re done, click the Unmount button and the Disconnect button before you unplug your mobile device.

If you’re prompted with a ‘warning’ screen about network usage, click Yes.

MidpSSH will now attempt to connect to your host.

Assuming you provided the correct credentials etc, you’ll find yourself connected to your server and at a command prompt. You’ll also notice that the font is so small it’s almost unreadable. We’ll fix this later (unless you like squinting).

To enter a command, click Input. Type in your command (in the example below, I’m using a simple ls to list the files in my home folder).

Now click Menu then select and click Type.

This will paste the ls command at the command prompt, but not actually execute it. Click Menu, scroll down to ENTER and click it.

Now the ls command will be executed.

For those paying close attention, yes, you could have skipped step #13 by selecting Enter instead of Type back in step #12.

Another much faster way to enter commands is to setup Macros. To do so, click Menu then select and click Macros from the menu.

Highlight the default macro set, click Menu and select Edit. Give it a new name (for example, I named my first set of macros common commands.

Now “enter” your first group of macros by selecting its name and clicking. You’ll notice a rather empty screen. To create your first macro, click Menu and then New.

Give your macro/command a name (optional but helpful). In the Value: field enter the command you want to execute. In my example I used the ps command with the aux options.

In the Mode section you’ll need to decide if you want the command to execute as soon as you select it (Enter) or just be pasted at the command prompt (Type). When you’re done, click Create.

Now select your new macro and click it.

And it will be executed (again, the command will be run if you selected Enter or just pasted to the prompt if you selected Type).

To disconnect, click Menu then Disconnect.

Back at the main menu, scroll down to Settings and click it.

Scroll down to Fonts and click it.

From here you can increase the size of the font used….

and alter the font colour and background colour.

Below you’ll find a screenshot of an SSH session with the font slightly increased.

This tutorial will show you how to install and setup Pocket Nester Plus, a NES emulator for your Windows Mobile Smartphone.

Please note: This guide was published back in 2008 and is now considered out of date. You can try using Pocket Nester Plus but the steps will be different than what’s outlined below.

Now you’ll need to download <strike>Pocket Nester Plus</strike> Note: software has been abandoned, link no longer available. Transfer the file to your phone and select it. Click Install to begin the installation.

Once completed, click Done. Don’t worry too much if you get an error about the software being developed for a previous version of Windows Mobile. It should work anyway (it did for me, using WM 6.0).

Now launch Pocket Nester Plus from your Applications list. You’ll probably find it in the Games section.

Click File and then Open ROM…

Navigate to a ROM (.nes) file, select it and click Done.

Before you start playing, there are a few things you might want to change/customize. Open the Options menu (which I was able to do by hitting the Z key on my phones QWERTY keyboard, but it may vary based on phone). Select Preferences from the Options menu.

Place a check in the box labeled Associated .NES files. This will allow you to just click on a .nes (ROM) file and Pocket Nester Pro will launch and load that game.

Again select the Options menu, this time select Controllers… Highlight and then click the … button next to A:. Now select the key on your phones keyboard that you want to use as the Nintendo controllers “A” button. Repeat this process to customize each button.

And let the games begin!

This tutorial will guide you through setting up and using WWWinamp, a Windows web server-like application that allows remote control of Winamp via any web browser. If you run a media server in your house and want to be able to control what’s playing in Winamp without having to go to that server, this is the program for you.

Please note: This guide was published back in 2008 and is now considered a bit of out date. With that said, WWWinamp is still available to download and use, and should still work exactly as outlined in this guide.

To get started, download and install WWWinamp. It might go without saying, but I’ll do it anyway, you will of course need to have Winamp installed as well. The installation of WWWinamp is very straight forward – you’ll mostly click “next” a bunch of times.

Once the install has finished, you’ll need to edit the config file. To do so, click Start -> All Programs -> WWWinamp -> WWWinamp Configuration.

Scroll down to the port: section of the file. Select a port to use to run WWWinamp on. The default is 80, but I prefer to use 8090. Whatever you choose, make sure it isn’t one that conflicts with another program running on your PC.

In the AccessLoginPassword: section you can specify a user name and password so that only you can access WWWinamp. If you’re only going to control Winamp from a device in your house (and your PC is connected to a router), you can skip using a user/pass entirely. This tutorial assumes that your PC is behind a router. If you do want to password protect access to WWWinamp, use the format:

AccessLoginPassword:username:password

Similar to the previous step, you can set a user name and password to the admin section of WWWinamp. And again, if you’re behind a router and don’t plan on accessing Winamp from outside of your own network, you can skip adding a user/pass. If you do want to password protect the admin section, use the format:

AdminLoginPassword:username:password

Now scroll down to the DBPath section. It’s here that you’ll tell WWWinamp where your audio files are stored. Use a semicolon to separate different folders. For example, I keep my music two folders – C:\mp3 and the “My Music” folder, which is C:\Documents and Settings\my-user-name-\My Documents\My Music\. So my DPPath looks like this:

DBPath:C:\mp3;C:\Documents and Settings\my-user-name-\My Documents\My Music\

Now save the config file by selecting File -> Save.

Launch WWWinamp by clicking Start -> All Programs -> WWWinamp -> WWWinamp Server Start.

If a firewall window pops up, make sure to click Unblock.

The WWWinamp server window will appear. Assuming all went well, it will end with “entering server loop”. If there’s an error, read it carefully and go back to the config file to correct any mistakes.

Test out WWWinamp by entering http://localhost:port in a web browser on the same PC that WWWinamp is running on. Remember, the port you’ll enter is the one you specified back in step 3. If you opted to specify a user name and password, you’ll need to enter them here.

You should be presented with a window similar to the one below. Click on Show all to display your MP3s.

Click on a song to have it start playing in Winamp.

If Winamp isn’t running, WWWinamp will tell you.

To start Winamp, add /admin to the end of the URL to enter the admin section of WWWinamp. So your URL will look something like: http://localhost:port/admin. Now click the Try starting Winamp link.

That should launch Winamp and the song you previously selected will start playing.

From the /admin section you can also jump to songs in the queue, remove songs from the queue, etc.

Please note: This guide was published back in 2007 and unfortunately the software is no longer available for downloading.

First you’ll need to download the OS X Leopard skin for Windows Mobile Smarthpones (Update: download link no longer works). Extract the two files, OS X Leopard.home.xml and OS X Leopard.jpg, to a folder somewhere on your hard drive.

Connect your Smartphone via ActiveSync, Windows Mobile Device Center or by whatever method you use to transfer files to your Smartphone. Upload the two files to the \Application Data\Home folder on your Smartphone.

In your Smartphone settings, change the Home screen layout: to OS X Leopard, the Color scheme: to Default and the Background image: to <trong>OS X Leopard. Click Done and return to your Home screen.

And now your Windows Mobile Smartphone will look very Leopard’ish.

By installing Post to del.icio.us, a free add-on for Internet Explorer Mobile, you can quickly add any site to your del.icio.us account. For full setup and usage instructions, keep reading..

Please note: This guide was published back in 2007 and is now considered out of date, unless you’re using the same (older) Windows Mobile 5/6 Pocket PC device. All of the software required to follow this guide still exists, with the exception of the site del.icio.us itself – which should return at some point in 2021.

First things first – Post to del.icio.us requires that the .NET Compact Framework 2 is installed on your Windows Mobile device.

Next up, download and install Post to del.icio.us from the authors home page. Do not be deterred if you read Windows Mobile 5/6 Pocket PC devices (with a touchscreen) as a requirement – Post to del.icio.us worked exactly as it should have on my non-touchscreen Windows Mobile 6 Smartphone. The installation is as straight forward as you’d expect – just upload the .cab file to your device and click it.

Now launch IE Mobile, and visit a site you want to add to your del.icio.us account

Select Menu, navigate to Tools and click Post to del.icio.us…

The url and description will be auto-populated (though both are still editable) – add any tags you feel are appropriate, and even notes if you wish. When you’re done click Save

The first time you add a site using Post to del.icio.us you’ll be prompted to enter your del.icio.us user name and password. Going forward, it will be remembered.

Now visit your del.icio.us account and your recently added site will be there!

This tutorial will guide you through the steps to converting an existing video file to a .wmv (Windows Media Video) to play on your Windows Mobile device.

Please note: This guide was published back in 2007 and is now considered out of date, unless you’re using the same (older) software – technically this all still works – you just may want to consider encoding your video to a better format.

First things first – download Windows Media Encoder. It’s free. It works in 2k/XP and though not ‘officially’, it seems to work fine in Vista, Windows 7 and even Windows 10. The installation is painfully straight forward – you’ll just click ‘Next’ a bunch of times.

Once the installation has completed, launch Windows Media Encoder. Select Convert a file and then click OK.

From the Source file: section, click the Browse button. Navigate to the file you want to convert into a wmv, select it, and click OK. The first time you convert a file you may want to go with a smaller one. It will take less time to encode, and if the resulting quality isn’t good enough, you won’t have ‘wasted’ a lot of time. Once you find the settings that work best for playback on your device, you can convert larger/longer videos with confidence.

The default Output file: name and location will be identical to the input file, but with .wmv as the extension. You can change the name and save location of the output file if you wish, by clicking Browse. Once you’re happy with the input and output files, click Next.

You’ll be prompted to select a Content Distribution method. For the sake of converting your first video file, select Pocket PC as the method. Further down in this tutorial (step 12) I’ll go into more detail on customizing the quality of .wmv. Click Next.

Review the info on the Encoding Options. You may even want to write it down, so you can compare it to customized video files that you’ll be trying out later. Click Next (not Finish).

Enter the meta data for your video. This isn’t mandatory, but it does help when you’re searching for files, how they’re displayed in Windows Media Player etc. When you’re done, click Next.

And now review all of the info for your video conversion. Remove the check from the Begin converting when I click Finish (so that you can preview the encoder window before it’s actually encoding). Click Finish.

And here it is. The main encoding window. You can click around and explore the various options, but try not to change anything quite yet. You’ll want to create a default Pocket PC video, so that you can compare its quality to the custom videos you’ll create later. Click the Start Encoding button when you’re ready to convert the video.

Make yourself comfortable. Or, make yourself a cup of coffee. Watching videos encode is about as interesting as watching paint dry.

By default, the video will go through two ‘passes’.

Once the conversion has finished, you’ll be presented with a summary screen. Here you can find the resulting file size, bit rates etc. Click Close.

Navigate to the output file, and upload it to your Windows Mobile device (via ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center in Vista).

Give the video a play. Watch it in full-screen and try to determine if the audio and video quality are suitable for you.

At this point, if you’re happy with the resulting file – you’re done. If the quality is good enough for you, you can just repeat the above steps to convert more of your video files. Remember – the resulting file is never going to be better than the original file, but a lot of the time it will be smaller in size, and of decent enough quality to suit a small screen device (as most Windows Mobile products are). If you’d like to try customizing the videos to go for higher audio, video (or both) quality – keep reading.

Using the same file that you converted in steps 1-14 (so you can compare the resulting quality), repeat the same steps (but choose a different name for the resulting file, otherwise you’ll over-write the first .wmv). This time when you get to step 7, again be sure to remove the check from the box labeled Begin converting when I click Finish. Click the Properties button and then select the Compression tab. From here, you can increase the quality of the video by selecting a higher bit rate. You can also increase (or decrease) the Audio bit rate.

Click the Start Encoding button when you’re ready to convert your video again.

And once again watch as it converts/encodes.

Click Close after reviewing the results.

Transfer the new video to your Windows Mobile device and compare the quality to the first video. Depending on what type of Windows Mobile device you have, the higher the quality, the harder it is for the device to play back the file. So files that are encoded at a very “high” quality, actually suffer by jittery playback on your Windows Mobile device. The trick is finding the right bit rate and quality settings that are best for your device.

This article will take you through the steps to set up and sync your Windows Mobile device with a PC running Windows Vista.

Before you get too far into it, make sure that you meet the following requirements:

System Requirements

Windows Vista Ultimate

Windows Vista Enterprise

Windows Vista Business

Windows Vista Home Premium

Windows Vista Home Basic

Windows Vista Server “Longhorn”

Microsoft Outlook 2003 or Microsoft Outlook 2007 are required for synchronization of e-mail, contacts, tasks and notes to your PC.

Supported Devices

Windows Mobile 2003

Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition

Windows Mobile 5.0

Windows Mobile 5.0 with Messaging and Security Feature Pack

Windows Mobile 6

Windows Embedded CE 6.0

As long as you have one of the above mentioned versions of Vista, and a mobile device/PDA running one of the above listed operating systems, you should have no problem setting everything up.

Setting Up the Windows Mobile Device Center in Vista

When you plug your Windows Mobile device into a PC running Vista for the first time, you should be notified the device drivers are being installed, and eventually a window similar to the screenshot below will pop up. Just close this window if it appears.

Navigate to your Control Panel and double-click the Windows Mobile Device Center icon. If it’s not there, don’t worry – just skip down to step 4.

When opened, you can set a couple (not many) of the Windows Mobile device connection settings. Make sure at least one of the connection methods is enabled.

If you’re not presented with the window below (Connection Settings), scroll down and see if the window similar to the one in step 6 is displayed. If it is, that means you have the full Windows Mobile Device Center already installed, and can continue on at step 6.

In order to sync your email, notes and calendar from Outlook, you’ll want to download Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 for Windows Vista. Save the file to your desktop (or any folder) and once the download has completed, run it.

Follow the few installation steps (which mostly consist of clicking ‘Next’ a few times).

Now go back to the Control Panel and double-click on the Windows Mobile Device Center. Make sure your Windows Mobile device is plugged in and the status is set to Connected. Click the Set up your device button.

Select the elements you want to sync to your mobile device and then click Next.

Give your device a name, and if you want to quickly access the Windows Mobile Device Center from your desktop, leave the Create a shortcut option selected. Click Set Up to continue.

Your mobile device and PC will now start to synchronize.

And once completed, you’ll be presented with the Device Center ‘home’ screen.

You’ll know when your device is synchronizing by the small ‘green arrows’ system tray icon (very similar to the Active Sync icon you may have seen/used in previous versions of Windows).

From the Windows Mobile Device Center ‘home’ screen you can change your device settings, upload and download files to/from your device etc. Select the Change content sync settings in the Mobile Device Settings window.

Below you’ll see the options for changing the sync settings. Select the Sync Settings link in the E-mail section.

From here you can customize exactly how you want your email to be synchronized. Make any changes you wish, and then click the Save button.

Repeat step 13 but choose the Calendar settings. Again, make any changes you deem appropriate.

Clicking Save will make the changes immediately.

This tutorial will guide you in “app unlocking” your HTC S621. I was hoping to create something like ‘how to app unlock a windows mobile smartphone’, but after spending hours and hours trying to unlock my phone, I’ve discovered there are possibly hundreds of different ways – no two are the same, and not all will work for all phones. I can only confirm that the following method works for Rogers (a Canadian mobile provider) customers using the HTC S621. It may work for other Smartphones as well.

App unlocking will allow you to install “unsigned” 3rd party software. If you’ve ever received the error “Installation was unsuccessful. The program or setting cannot be installed because it is not digitally signed with a trusted certificate”, this tutorial is for you.

Please note: This guide was originally published back in 2007. Quite obviously, a lot has changed since then. With that said, the software and steps outlined in this guide are still valid and work to this day.

You’ll need to download these 2 files – SP_AllowCertificateInstall.cab and regeditSTG2.exe.

Upload SP_AllowCertificateInstall.cab to your device (or download it directly to your device). Save the file on your devices main memory, not on a mini-SD card. Use the file manager to navigate to SP_AllowCertificateInstall.cab and run it. Click Done when it’s done.

Now upload regeditSTG2.exe to your HTC. Use the file manager to navigate to regeditSTG2.exe and run it.

Now from inside the registry editor, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies

When you get to the second Policies folder, click the Values button.

Highlight the 00001001 entry and then select it.

Change the Value data: from 2 to 1, and then click Done.

Now highlight the 00001005 entry and then select it.

Change the Value data: from 16 to 40, and then click Done.

Now scroll down to the 00001017 entry, highlight it and then select it.

The Value data: may already be set to 144. If it is, leave it alone (just click Done). If it’s not, set it to 144 – then click Done.

Now you can close down the registry editor and reboot your phone (turn the power off, then back on again). Your HTC S621 is now app unlocked and ready to install unsigned software.

If you live in Canada, you know how outrageous even the ‘lowest’ mobile monthly plans cost. One way to get around the price gouging is to get a Wi-Fi enabled Skype supported phone, and make calls with Skype.

Please note: This guide was originally published back in 2007. Quite obviously, a lot has changed since then. Skype no longer actively supports older versions of Windows Mobile – only Android, iPhone and Windows 10 Mobile. This article is staying online as a historical/archived document, and should be treated as such.

The steps and screenshots in this tutorial are specific for a Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone. With that said, they’re probably pretty similar for Windows Mobile 6, and even the Pocket PC version (though I can’t confirm PPC).

Before you get too far into this, there are a few things you should know up front.

If you already have a Skype account and it has more than 100 “contacts” associated with it, you may want to create a new one to use with your mobile. Throughout the Skype knowledgebase, one of the most common troubleshooting tips is “make sure your Skype contact list has less than 100 entries”.

Skype for Mobile requires the use of a headset. Only “some” Bluetooth headsets will work. The one that came with my HTC S621 works perfectly fine.

Download Skype for Mobile from: https://www.skype.com/en/get-skype/skype-for-mobile/

If your phone supports directly installing .cab files, you can skip ActiveSync entirely. Look for the You can also download the .cab file (for advanced users only) link, and download the .cab file directly to your mobile phone.

Once Skype has installed, launch it from your Today screen.

Give it a moment..

and click Accept to continue.

Review the info provided on the Important notice section, and click OK.

Enter your Skype Name and Password in the spaces provided. Check Sign in automatically on start if you want to sign in to Skype automatically each time you launch it. Click Sign in to continue.

Unless you have an unlimited 3G or EDGE data plan, you will almost certainly want to select Use WiFi only as the Connection Method. Click OK to finish.

Skype will now connect and sign in.

Select the Skype Test Call entry and click Call. Make sure that your headset is plugged in.

Follow the instructions (just talk into the mic when told, and then listen for yourself).

After a successful test call, click Hang up.

Now give it a test with someone on your contact list. As long as you have access to a free wireless network, you can use Skype to make all of your calls. Give your mobile provider a shout and tell them you want to downgrade to the lowest possible plan per month, and save on your phone calls.

This overview will explain your options when it comes to using Google services such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Reader, Google Search, Google Maps and even YouTube – with your Windows Mobile device. Though the screenshots are specific to Windows Mobile 5.0 on a Smartphone, they will be similar for Pocket PC and Windows Mobile 6.0 devices as well.

Please note: This guide was originally published back in 2007. Quite obviously, a lot has changed since then – not the least of which is Windows Mobile no longer being in development. For those of you still using a Windows Mobile device – some of the suggestions and solutions in this guide are still completely valid – others are not. It has been updated where possible. This article is staying online as a historical/archived document, and should be treated as such.

It’s also worth noting that all of the services were downloaded and/or accessed without using ActiveSync once – so Mac/Linux users who own Windows Mobile devices aren’t left out.

Google Calendar

Via web – just visit https://calendar.google.com. Works in Opera Mini 4 beta, I couldn’t get it to work in Mozilla Mobile browser, but could have been related to my phone. Sometimes requires you to clear the Internet Explorer Mobile cache and cookies before it displays correctly. Advantages: will always be in sync with the “normal” Google Calendar web view, because that’s what it is. Doesn’t require any download or special plugin. The links to Maps work and are helpful to access that easily. Disadvantages: doesn’t support reminders, doesn’t show upcoming events on the Today screen (which pulls events from the built in Calendar application).

<strike>GCalendarSync – this is the solution I use</strike> Update: no longer in development.

Gmail

Via web – just enter http://gmail.com in your mobile browser and a working version of Gmail will appear. Advantages: will always be in sync with the “normal” Gmail web view, because that’s what it is. The Mobile view of Gmail is quite customizable, you can choose to display your inbox, or a combination of filters. The “save password” checkbox works – so you don’t have to enter your pass every time you visit Gmail (note: which may be a security issue for you to consider – it’s a feature I use, but only when I know and trust the network I’m connected to). Doesn’t require you to enable POP on your Gmail account. No download required. Disadvantages: no audio or visual indication of new email – you have to refresh the page.

<strike>Google for Mobile</strike> Update: no longer in development.

The built in POP mail app – “Messaging”. Advantages: it displays new messages on the Today screen. The setup includes a Gmail template, so the only info you really need is your user name and password (and you need to enable POP on your Gmail account). Disadvantages: I’ve yet to figure out a way to be notified of new emails aside from the Today screen entry changing the number of unread emails. It doesn’t sync with your Gmail account at all – mark something read on your “Messaging” version of Gmail, it remains unread in the web version.
