How to upload your Flip Videos to YouTube

This guide will show you step by step how to upload the videos you’ve taken with your Flip Camera to YouTube.

Please note: This guide was initially published back in 2011 and some of the software it references may have changed since then. It may be easier to just copy the video from your camera and upload it manually to YouTube.

Start out by launching the FlipShare software. Select the video you want to upload to YouTube.

From the Share section, click the Online button.

Select YouTube from the list of sites, and then click the Next button.

Enter your YouTube credentials in the spaces provided. This is most often just your gmail.com email address. Click Login to proceed.

Decide if you want everyone (the public) to be able to watch your video, or have it Private. For the sake of this tutorial, we’ll upload a video and make it available for anyone to watch – which is the default. Click the Share button when you’re ready.

In the bottom left corner of the screen, the FlipShare progress meter will display. This will give you a rough indication as to how long it’s going to take to upload your video to YouTube.

Once completed, click the YouTube link.

This will take you directly to your YouTube.com videos page. Click the Edit button.

From here, you can change all sorts of the info about the video. The title, description, tags – and much more. Click the Save Changes button when you’re done.

That’s it – you’re done! You’ve now transferred (copied) your Flip Video to YouTube.

How to Import Flip Videos into iMovie

This brief tutorial will show you how to import videos that you’ve taken with your Flip Video Camera and import them into iMovie.

Please note: This guide was initially published back in 2010 and some of the software it references has probably changed since then. At this point (2021) you may be better off just copying the video from the Flip and importing it manually into iMovie.

Start out by opening iMovie and either create a new project or open an existing one.

Select File from the Main Menu, then Import and finally Movies…

Navigate to the Flip Video that you want to import into iMovie. Select it (or them) – make sure that all of the options you want are set, and then click Import. If you’re having trouble finding the Flip Video you want to import, you can locate them based on how you access your Flip Videos – either by copying them directly from the Camera, or using the FlipShare software. If you’re using the FlipShare software, you can locate your saved Flip Video’s in your Movies -> FlipShare Data -> Videos folder.

iMovie will now process the video(s). The length of time this takes varies, but the larger the video, the longer it will take.

Once the Import has completed, you can edit it in iMovie etc.

How to Change the Default Save Location for Flip Videos

By default, FlipShare saves the videos you make with your Flip Camera in a certain place in Windows and macOS. This tutorial will show you how to change that location to one that you may prefer – like an external USB drive or even another folder on your existing hard drive.

Windows Instructions for Changing the Default Save Location for Flip Videos

Launch FlipShare and select the Edit menu, and then Preferences… from the drop-down list.

Select the Library tab. The default location your Flip Video files are saved in is in a sub-folder titled FlipShare Data of your My Videos or Videos folder. To change this location, click the Change Location… button.

Navigate to the drive (or folder) that you want to now save your Flip Videos in. Select it, and click the OK button.

All of the videos you’ve already saved to the previous default location will now be moved to the new one. Going forward, when you save a file via FlipShare, it will be saved to this new location.

Click OK to restart FlipShare for the changes to complete.

macOS Instructions for Changing the Default Save Location for Flip Videos

Launch FlipShare and select FlipShare from the menu bar, and then Preferences… from the drop-down list.

Select the Library tab. The default location that FlipShare saves your video files to is /Users/you/Movies/FlipShare Data/. To change this location, click the Change Location… button.

Select the new drive or folder that you want FlipShare to save your videos in from now on. Click the Choose button.

FlipShare will now transfer any existing video files you’ve saved from the previous (default) location, to the new one you’ve specified.

Click OK once the transfers have completed. If FlipShare doesn’t restart itself, do so manually now. That will finalize the preference change.

How to Install the Flip Camera in Windows

This very brief tutorial will show you how to install the FlipShare app for Windows that comes with your Flip Video Camera.

Plug in your Flip Video Camera to an available USB port on your PC. Click the Start button and select Computer from your Start menu.

Double-click the drive titled FLIPVIDEO. In the example screenshot below, my Flip Video Camera shows up as the H: drive – yours will vary.

Locate and double-click the file titled Setup_FlipShare.exe.

From here on the installation is totally straightforward. You’ll click ‘Next’ a few times and accept a license agreement. When the installation has completed, the FlipShare app will open.

That’s it – you’re done! From now on when you plug in your Flip Video Camera you can launch FlipShare by selecting it from your Programs list.

If for any reason at all you have trouble finding the software on the Flip Camera itself, you can download a copy from here and then run it once the download has completed.

Copy Videos From a Flip Camera Without Using FlipShare on a Mac

This tutorial will show you how to copy the videos you’ve taken with your Flip Camera onto your Mac’s hard drive, external drive, USB thumb drive – or any Mac – without using the FlipShare software.

Start out by plugging your Flip Camera into one of your Mac’s USB ports as usual.

Open a Finder window and select (1) FLIPVIDEO from the DEVICES list. Then select the (2) DCIM folder, then the (3) 100VIDEO. The 100VIDEO folder may also be called 101VIDEO or something similar. There may also be multiple folders. Start with the first folder, continue the following steps, and if that folder doesn’t contain your videos, come back and select the next one. Now, select (4) the video you want to copy.

If you have more than one video, select the first one and then tap the Space bar. That will bring up Quick View and you can preview the video to make sure it’s the one you want to copy.

Finally, drag the video you want to copy to the folder or drive you want to copy it to…

… and it’ll copy. You can delete the files on your Flip Video camera as you would any other file (after you’ve copied them!) if you wish.

How to Upload Flip Videos to Facebook from a Mac

This tutorial show you step by step how to upload videos taken with your Flip Video camera to Facebook, on a Mac.

Start out by plugging in your Flip Video camera to a USB port on your Mac. FlipShare should launch automatically. If you don’t have FlipShare installed, give this tutorial a whirl and then head back here.

Select the video you want to share on Facebook by clicking on it once. Then click the Online button from the Share panel.

Select facebook and then click the Next button.

Now you’ll need to sign in and authenticate with Facebook. Click the Login button.

Enter your Facebook credentials and click the Login button.

Click the Allow button.

Take one last look at the Items to Share list to make sure the right video is going to be uploaded, and then click the Share button.

The bottom left corner of the main FlipShare interface will now display the upload status.

Once the upload has completed, the status will change to Items successfully posted to Facebook. Click on the Facebook link (see screenshot below).

It’s likely that Facebook will need a little bit of time to process the video. Look for a link titled Videos Currently Processing and click it.

Click on the Edit Video link.

From here you can fill out all of the info you want included with your video. Give the video a title, a description, tag anyone in the video (if applicable) and set the Privacy: level accordingly. When you’re done, click the Save button.

After Facebook has finished processing your video, it will be listed along with all of your others. That’s it – you’re done!

How to Install the Flip Video Software for Mac

This detailed, step by step tutorial will show you how to install the Flip Video software app on your Mac.

Please note: This guide was initially published back in 2010 and the Flip Video app (FlipShare) may not work in modern versions of macOS. Unfortunately I no longer have my Flip Video camera so I can’t test the software by trying to install it on my Mac. It’s probably easiest to just manually copy the video to your Mac and use other video editing software – like iMovie.

Plug your Flip Video camera into an available USB port on your Mac. Then open up a Finder window. In the DEVICES section, you should now see a volume titled FLIPVIDEO – select it. Inside that volume locate the file titled Start FlipShare.app and double-click it.
