This tutorial will guide you through using RegistryBooster 2009 to clean and optimize your Windows system registry.
First up – RegistryBooster 2009 isn’t free, it costs $29.95. If you’re a regular Simple Help reader you know that we usually promote and write tutorials based on free software. With that said, RegistryBooster 2009 is a product well worth the money and a product we have no problem endorsing. There are plenty of other free registry scanning programs out there, but after thorough testing I have found RegistryBooster 2009 to be the most comprehensive and safe.
Why do you want to clean and optimize your Windows registry? From the RegistryBooster 2009 home page:
Have you noticed that the longer you have your computer, the slower it runs and the more it crashes? Often this phenomenon is caused by problems in the registry that accrue over time. Installing and uninstalling programs leave behind fragments — stray files, orphaned startup tasks, corrupted drivers. Over time the registry starts to get bogged down and conflicts emerge. Left unchecked, your system will become increasingly unstable, run more slowly and crash more frequently.
How to use RegistryBooster 2009
- Start off by downloading and installing RegistryBooster 2009. The installation process is very straight forward – you’ll just click Next a bunch of times. At the end of the installation you’ll be prompted to run it for the first time. Leave Run Uniblue RegistryBooster 2009 now checked, and click the Finish button.
- The registry scan will begin immediately. If you want to see how many issues RegistryBooster 2009 is going to find before you purchase it, let it run. If you’ve already purchased your copy, click Cancel so you can enter your registration info (and skip down to step #4 below).
- Once the scan has completed, you’ll be prompted with a message telling you how many invalid registry entries were found, and if you’d like to fix them. Click OK Note: if you look at the screenshot below, RegistryBooster 2009 found 1853 invalid entries on my roommates PC. That’s a lot of invalid entries/potential problems.
- Click the Clean registry button in the bottom right corner of the main RegistryBooster 2009 window. At this point you’ll be prompted to buy the program. Click the Purchase online button.
- If you’ve already purchased RegistryBooster 2009, enter the serial number in the space provided and click the Activate now button. Otherwise, click the Purchase online button to buy your copy.
- After you’ve purchased the program and entered the serial number, click OK to restart the program.
- Now that you’re using a fully registered version of RegistryBooster 2009, run the scan again. Click OK and then click the Clean registry button again.
- This time you’ll be prompted to backup your registry as a safety precaution. It’s a very good idea to do so, that way you can restore your registry to its previous state in case anything happens to go wrong. Click the Yes button.
- RegistryBooster 2009 will backup your registry…
- and then begin the cleanup process. Depending on how many invalid entries it found, the time it takes to complete can vary. With the 1853 invalid entries it found on my roommates PC, it took about 2 minutes to clean them all up.
- Click OK once the process has finished.
- Depending on the type of invalid entries it found and removed, you may be prompted to reboot your computer. Click the Reboot now button if RegistryBooster 2009 wants to reboot your PC.
- After your PC has rebooted, RegistryBooster 2009 will automatically launch again. Note that it may say that your registry health is only MODERATE, even after you’ve performed a full scan and cleanup. That’s ok.
- Select the Registry scan tab at the top of the RegistryBooster 2009 window, and then select the Registry defrag tab from the left column. Click the Defrag registry button in the bottom right corner of the screen.
- During the registry defrag, all of your programs – including RegistryBooster 2009 – will appear to be unresponsive. This is totally normal. It takes a minute or two to complete, and once it’s done you’ll be prompted to reboot again.
- Click the Restart now button, and windows will reboot.
- Once your PC starts up again, RegistryBooster 2009 will automatically open. This time you your “registry health” will be HIGH.
- If the need arises (programs that worked before seem to be more buggy) – you can always revert to a previous version of your registry. Just select the Restore tab at the top, choose the registry backup you want to restore to, and click the Restore button. RegistryBooster 2009 is one of the safest registry cleaning applications, so it’s very unlikely that you’ll ever need to actually restore to a previous version. But the ability to do so is an excellent safety precaution.
- Finally, select the Settings tab at the top. From here you can change a few of the RegistryBooster 2009 options. For example, I opted to have RegistryBooster 2009 close when I click on the Windows close button (the X at the top of every program in Windows). I also removed the check from the box labeled Start RegistryBooster 2008 when Windows starts. Running a registry scan/clean is a fantastic way to increase the stability and performance of your PC, but it doesn’t need to be run every day. I’ve found that once or twice a month is enough to keep my PC in top shape.
- Update: – my roommate asked me if I added more RAM (memory) or “did something” to his PC, because “PhotoShop is crashing way less often and Windows is starting up a lot faster than usual”. I showed him the RegistryBooster 2009 icon on his desktop and told him to run it every few weeks – he’s thrilled.
