This guide will take you step by step through the process of installing, setting up and using the PortableApps app so that you can take your own software and settings with you everywhere you go.

Background

The PortableApps app lets you turn any thumb drive into a “portable PC” filled with your software, settings and bookmarks, documents, photos, audio/video files, and more. It allows you to make any PC feel like it’s your own, and doesn’t leave anything behind. It’s incredibly handy to be able to plug it into a friends computer, work or school computer, and have everything you need ready and waiting for you to use.

It works on every modern version of Windows, all the way back to Windows 2000. Perhaps best of all, it’s completely free and it’s even open source, so you can rest assured that there’s no malware or spyware hidden in the app.

Installing PortableApps on a USB Thumb Drive

To get started, plug in your USB thumb drive. You don’t have to delete everything on it, but it might be a good idea to copy the contents over to your hard drive just in case something goes wrong and your data gets erased during the PortableApps installation – which is unlikely, but things happen…

Visit the PortableApps download page and download the installer file. Once the download has completed, run the file.

After clicking Next a few times you’ll be asked what kind of installation you want. Select New Install and then click the Next button.

Choose Portable – install to a portable device and click Next

Select the drive that represents your USB thumb drive and then click Next

At this point you’ll be presented with a confirmation screen. Make sure the right drive has been selected and then click the Install button.

Just sit back and wait while the app installs itself onto your thumb drive. This process doesn’t take very long.

Finally, make sure there’s a check in the box labelled Run PortableApps.com Platform and then click the Finish button.

Setting Up and Using PortableApps

When PortableApps opens for the first time it displays the “About” screen. Close it by clicking the Close button.

The PortableApps app itself will be displayed in the bottom right corner of your desktop. To get started adding software to it, click the Apps button.

Select the Get More Apps… option and then the By Category option.

Give PortableApps time to load all of the software that it offers. This can take a minute or two so just let it do its thing.

Eventually a window will appear with a big list of all the software that works with PortableApps out of the box. Go through the list and place a check in the box next to each app you want to install to your thumb drive.

Click the Next button after you’ve made your selections.

Now PortableApps will download and install everything you just selected. This process can take quite a while, and unfortunately you can’t just leave it and come back later. Many of the Apps require you to click “Accept” to a Terms of Service. The good news is that you only have to go through this process once. Open Minesweeper or something to help kill the time.

Once everything has completed, click the Finish button.

Now the PortableApps app will have a list of all the software available on your thumb drive. Click one of the apps…

… and it’ll open up, exactly the same as if it was installed on the hard drive of the computer you’re using.

PortableApps also includes shortcuts to folders that it has created for you on the thumb drive. Click the Documents button.

Windows Explorer will open and display the contents of that Documents folder – which is on your thumb drive. This is a great place to store all of the files you want to take with you.

One last thing you may want to check out before you’re done – click the Options button.

Check out each tab/section and make any changes you see fit.

The Themes tab contains a series of themes or “skins” that PortableApps can use. I didn’t love the default one, but I found a great one to use in this list. Select one of them and then click OK to apply the change.

Keep trying the themes until you find one you like.

Finally – when you want to use this on another PC just plug in your thumb drive and navigate to it using Windows Explorer. Double-click Start.exe to launch PortableApps.

Remember that when you set up the apps on your thumb drive, the settings for those apps are stored on the thumb drive itself. So you can take your drive to use on another PC, and everything will ready to go. If you use Thunderbird to check your email through PortableApps, you may want to set it to leave mail on the server, so that your email is available to your “main” mail app as well.

If you purchased a MacBook, MacBook Air or MacBook Pro with a smaller SSD hard drive, you may want to consider uninstalling some of the Apps that come pre-loaded with your laptop. For example, I’ve never used Garageband in my life – uninstalling it is an easy way to reclaim 1.44 gigabytes of drive space. If you’re using Office 365, LibreOffice or OpenOffice, you can also reclaim some space by uninstalling Numbers, Keynote and Pages. Finally, if you aren’t planning on doing any video work with iMovie – it’s a whopping 2.82 gigabytes that could be reclaimed.

Don’t forget – all of the above mentioned Apps can be downloaded and reinstalled for free via the App Store at any point in time.

Garageband – 1.44GB
Numbers – 427MB
Pages – 508MB
Keynote – 682MB
iMovie – 2.82GB

There are a few ways to download using bittorrent on your Chromebook, and we’ll take you step by step through (arguably) the easiest one – using a free and open source App.

First things first, download the actual .torrent file that you want to use. Save it to the Downloads folder on your Chromebook.

Head over to the LibreTorrent page on the Google Play Store and click the Install button.

After the installation has completed, launch LibreTorrent from your App drawer.

After LibreTorrent opens, click the ‘plus sign’ ( + ) button located in the bottom right corner of the App (see screenshot below).

Choose Open file

Navigate to the .torrent file that you have saved in your Downloads folder and double-click it.

When the Add torrent screen appears, click the ‘check mark’ button located in the upper-right corner of the App (see screenshot).

The contents of the .torrent file will now begin transferring. You’ll hear a ‘ding’ notification sound when the transfer has completed. If all you want to do is download the files, you’re pretty much done at this point. To view additional information or options for the torrent, double-click it.

From here you can get info on the STATE, FILES, TRACKERS, PEERS and PIECES,

Click the Pause button if you want to pause the transfer.

Click the “3 dots” button for more Options.

Those Options will include Force recheck, Force announce, Share magnet, Save torrent file, Add trackers and Speed limit.

Happy torrenting :)

This guide will take you each step of the way through setting up your PC (or Mac) to stream bittorrent videos as they download. It’s remarkably easy and completely free!

Using an absolutely fantastic App that works in Windows (Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista) OS X and macOS, and linux – you can watch bittorrent based videos as the actual files download – so you don’t need to wait for the file to finish before you start.

Before we jump in – remember that streaming torrent videos can land you in a world of legal hassles if the video in question is covered by a copyright law in your country. When in doubt, be safe and use a VPN! If you need help setting one up, we have instructions on how to do that if you’re using Windows 10, macOS or Ubuntu Linux.

Head over to the WebTorrent Desktop download page and download the version for your Operation System. The installation process is quick and straightfoward – once it’s done, launch the app. It doesn’t matter if you’re using Windows, macOS or Linux – it looks the same in all OS’s.

To watch a torrent while it downloads, just drag that torrent onto the Webtorrent Desktop App (see screenshot below). Or you can click File -> Open Torrent File… and select the torrent from your drive.

It will immediately begin to download.

At any point in time, hover your cursor over the torrent you want to watch and a ‘play button’ will appear next to that video (see screenshot below). Click it.

The Webtorrent Desktop app switches to “video” mode…

… and the video will begin to play.

You’ll notice a small ‘red bar’ across the bottom of the video. That bar indicates how much of the video has been downloaded so far.

In the bottom right corner of the video player there’s a small ‘cast’ icon. If you want to watch the video, as it downloads, on your TV – click the ‘cast’ button.

It’ll launch AirPlay etc.

If you want to return to the ‘torrent’ part of Webtorrent Desktop, click the “less-than sign” ( < ) in the upper-left corner of the video player.

From here you can see basic stats on your torrent – how much has been downloaded, the current transfer speeds, etc.

When the video file has finished downloading, you’ll be notified.

The torrent section will also indicate that the file is now ‘seeding’ instead of ‘downloading’.

If WebTorrent encounters a video file it can’t play, you’ll get a notification message and it’ll offer to open the file in VLC. Just click the PLAY IN VLC button and VLC will launch and start playing the video.

This quick tutorial will show you how to download files using BitTorrent directly to your Android phone or tablet.

First things first, head over to the Google Play Store and download and install uTorrent for your Android phone or tablet.

Once installed, launch it from your Applications section

Right away you’ll be presented with the main uTorrent for Android interface. Tap the “magnifying glass” icon in the left column to search for .torrent files.

Enter in the search phrase or keyword, and tap the Search button.

At this point your default browser will launch – or if you haven’t specified one, you’ll need to select a browser – and run a search for that phrase or keyword.

When you find the file you want to download, tap or click the link to the .torrent file.

Now select a location you want to save the file(s) contained within the .torrent. If you’re using an Android phone and the file(s) are large, you’ll likely want to save it to the SD card rather than the drive space that comes with your phone.

And now you’ll connect to “peers” and download the bittorrent files exactly as you would on a PC or Mac.

If while browsing the web on your Android device you run across a .torrent you want to download, simply click the link or button to that .torrent file, and uTorrent will launch. Downloading .torrent’s on Android is now that easy!

If you use torrent clients to download files from the Internet, you might think of something you want, but you’re not at home to kick off the download. The solution to this is to use Dropbox to start torrent downloads remotely, from one computer to another.

For this tutorial we’ll be using Dropbox, a Windows 7 Computer, and uTorrent. We’ll also demonstrate how to do it between Mac & PC.

Windows to Windows using uTorrent

1. The first thing you’ll need to do is download and install uTorrent and Dropbox for Windows on both machines if you don’t have them already.

When installing uTorrent make sure to uncheck the “crapware” it tries to install.

You can do this with other Torrent clients, but I prefer uTorrent as it’s light, fast, and easy to use. If you’re using a different Torrent client, check through its settings and you should find something similar. Click on Options, then Preferences.

2. In the left pane click on Directories and check the box Automatically load .torrents from then click the “…” button to browse to a Dropbox location.

3. Here we created a new folder in Dropbox called Torrents.

4. So when you’re done, the screen should look similar to this. You probably don’t want to keep the completed torrents in your Dropbox folder as they can be quite large. Here we selected the local drive – Downloads folder – on the Windows computer.

If you’re using a different Torrent client, check through its settings and you should find something similar.

5. Browse to a torrent site such as Etree

6. Download the Torrent file only…don’t open it with a default torrent client if you have one installed.

7. Once it’s downloaded, transfer that file over to the Dropbox folder you pointed uTorrent to monitor.

8. Once the process of transferring the torrent file has completed, uTorrent will load it up and start downloading and seeding it automatically.

Obviously you’ll need to have the remote computer powered on and running Dropbox and uTorrent. For instance, keep your home computer on, then from work you can put the torrent files in Dropbox. Then when you get home, you should have a good amount of content to enjoy.

Mac to PC using Dropbox and uTorrent

In this section we’ll take a look at sending a file through Dropbox to a Mac and use the uTorrent BitTorrent client for OS X. The process is essentially the same as in Windows, but you’ll need to find the setting in uTorrent for Mac so it monitors Dropbox.

Again start with installing Dropbox and uTorrent on your Mac if you haven’t already.

2. Open uTorrent and click on uTorrent >> Preferences.

3. Click on Download and check the box Open torrent files found in and click the menu to change the location.

4. Select Dropbox and the folder you want to put the torrent files in…where in this case it’s Torrents. Then click the Open Button.

5. Then you should see something similar to the following.

6. On the Windows Machine, simply save the torrent file and transfer it to the Torrents Dropbox folder.

7. Then just like on the Windows machine, on the Mac OS X system uTorrent for Mac grabs the file and starts downloading it automatically.

That’s it! Now if you’re at work and want to download a certain torrent at home, using Dropbox and uTorrent for Mac or PC makes it a piece of cake.

This easy to follow guide will show you how to use uTorrent to send and/or share files with your friends over bittorrent.

uTorrent is one of the most popular free BitTorrent clients today. It’s widely used because it has a huge set of features, is stable, and doesn’t take up a lot of your computer’s resources. Among the many features of uTorrent is the ability to send files to your friends very easily.

If you don’t already have uTorrent installed, head over to their download page, download and install it.

Start uTorrent and from the menu bar access the Preferences menu by clicking Options -> Preferences.

In the Preferences window, navigate to Connection and give a port value between 10,000 and 40,000 (but without a comma).

Go to the Advanced section of the preferences by clicking in the left pane of the same window and scroll down until you find bt.enable_tracker. Set this to true and close the Preferences window by clicking OK.

Go to the menu bar and click on File -> Create New Torrent…

A Create New Torrent window will open. Select the files you want to send by clicking the Add File button. If you want to send entire directories, then click Add directory.

Now you’ll need to enter a pretty specific line in the Trackers: field.

It starts with http:// and is the followed by your IP address. To determine what your IP address is, visit this page. Copy the number displayed from that page directly behind the http://

So far the line should look something like this:

http://192.153.3.48

Directly after your IP address, enter a colon ( : ). Then enter the port number that you specified in the Preferences (back in step #3). Now the line should look something like:

http://192.153.3.48:52594

Finally, add a slash ( / ) and the ‘name’ for your torrent. The name doesn’t matter – making it something descriptive is a good idea. So your Tracker: line should now look something like…

http://192.153.3.48:52594/testTorrent

Check the Start seeding checkbox to start sending the file.

Now click Create and save as to save the torrent on your hard disk.

Now you’ve created your torrent, it’s seeding, and ready to be downloaded. Send the .torrent file you created to your friend(s) and when they load it into their bittorrent client (doesn’t have to be uTorrent), the file transfer will begin you and your friend(s) directly without any middle man.

This detailed tutorial will take you step by step all the way through the process required to stream video files/movies from your Mac to your Playstation 3 – using nothing but free software.

2021 Update: although this guide is 10 years old, it’s still accurate! The screenshots will look slightly different, but on the whole – it’s still the same. With that said, you may want to look into Plex as a streaming server – your PS3 will be able to connect to it and it’s much more feature rich than the software outlined in this guide. Plus, it’s free too – and it works in macOS, Windows and Linux.

This tutorial will show you how to install and setup Vuze, which is actually a bittorrent client. We’ll be using as the ‘streaming server’ on your Mac – which your PS3 can connect to and then play on your TV.

Before you get started, turn on your PS3, and make sure it’s connected to your local network. Then head over to your Mac.

Now download Vuze. Open the .dmg file, and then run the Vuze Installer.

Place a check in the box labeled Customize, and then click the I Agree button.

Once the installation has completed, launch Vuze if it doesn’t open on its own.

Here’s where it gets important. In the left column/window, click the Turn On button in the Devices section.

Before you click the Turn On button, decide if you want to share anonymous device statistics with Vuze. If you do, leave the box checked. If not, remove the check mark. Then click the Turn On button.

The files required for streaming from your Mac (via Vuze) to your PS3 will now be downloaded and installed.

Now it’s time to add videos to Vuze, so that you can stream them to your PS3. Locate a few videos / movies and drag them from Finder to the PS3 icon in the Devices list of Vuze.

You’ll be prompted to choose either PS3 HD or PS3 SD. HD is high-definition, SD is standard-definition. I have always opted for PS3 HD and never had a problem (and the videos look great).

Your videos will now be added to the Vuze PS3 library. Some video types will need to be converted to a format compatible with the PS3. XviD files, one of the most popular video formats, do not need to be converted. MKV files however, do. As you can see in the screenshot below, the file Apollo 13.mkv needs to be converted, and is going to take approximately 7 hours and 24 minutes. The time it takes to convert videos that need converting is based on your Mac’s speed and the size and type of the video file being converted. Once you have a few videos added, move on to the next step.

Head over to your PS3. From the Dashboard move to the Video section. If you see a Vuze on [your Macs name], skip down to step #19 below. Otherwise, continue with the next step.

Select Search for Media Servers from the Video category of your PS3’s Dashboard.

Give it a few minutes to run…

… and at least one media server should be found. Return to the Video section.

Now select Vuze on [your Macs name].

This tutorial will guide you through the steps to install, setup and use Transmission to download files using BitTorrent in macOS.

Please note: While this tutorial was originally published in 2008, it has been updated to be current in 2021.

From the About Transmission page:

Transmission is an open source, volunteer-based project. Transmission is designed for easy, powerful use. We’ve set the defaults to “Just Work” and it only takes a few clicks to configure advanced features like watch directories, bad peer blocklists, and the web interface.

While the exactly steps and screenshots are specific to macOS, if you’re using Transmission in Linux or another OS, you’ll be able to follow along without any problems.

First up – download Transmission. The installation is simple – open the .dmg file and drag Transmission to your Applications folder. Launch it from there.

Transmission will open. Don’t be fooled by it’s fairly simplistic interface – it had a lot of advanced features, and way less bloat than some other BitTorrent programs.

To start downloading a torrent, select File and then Open Torrent File…

Navigate to a .torrent file (probably in your Downloads folder), select it and click Open

A confirmation/information window will pop up. This window lists all of the files that you’ll be downloading as a part of the .torrent. If you remove the check mark next to a file it won’t be included in the download. When you’re ready to start, click the Add button.

The upload and download speeds are displayed in the main Transmission window – along with your current ratio (how much you’ve downloaded:how much you’ve uploaded), the completion percentage, and an estimated time until the download is done. Double-click anywhere in that space.

From here you can review and change some of the settings and options for this specific download. The first section that will be displayed is the General Info. Select the Files icon to view a list of the files that are currently being downloaded (see screenshot below).

Now you can get the exact status on each of the files being downloaded, change the priority of an individual file (or files) and more.

You may have noticed the Transmission icon in your Dock is also displaying some info. The numbers in blue signify your current download speed, the numbers in green represent your upload speed (if someone is downloading from you).

To view and change the Transmission preferences, select Transmission from the menu bar, and then Preferences… from the drop down list.

The General tab offers exactly what you’d expect – general preferences. Make any changes you see fit – though the defaults are fine.

Click the Bandwidth tab. Here you can set the maximum upload and download speeds you want to use with Transmission. Removing the check marks from Download rate: and Upload rate: will tell Transmission to use the maximum bandwidth your connection allows.

Another neat feature of Transmission is that you can set bandwidth rates based on the time of day. If you use your Mac for work during the day, and don’t want Transmission to “hog” all of your bandwidth while you’re trying to get important Internet related tasks done, set a lower transfer rate in the spaces provided, place a check in the Schedule Speed Limit: box, and set the start and end times for this Transmission “throttle”.

Now click the Network tab. If you want to change the default port that Transmission uses, this is the spot to do it. If you do change the port, make sure your Firewall (or router) is set to use this new port.

Take a look at the other Preferences sections to become familiar with some of the other options that Transmission offers.

Once your download has completed, Transmission will notify you with a ‘ding’ sound and the main window will display solid green and blue lines.

Check your Downloads folder for all of the newly downloaded files – that’s it, you’re done! You can now use Transmission to download files using BitTorrent :)

This guide will take you step by step through setting up uTorrent so that you can connect to it from a remote computer, through a web browser, and control all of your torrents.

Please note: these steps apply to anyone using the Desktop version of uTorrent in Windows (not “uTorrent Web”). If you’re using uTorrent on a Mac or Linux computer you’ll probably have no trouble following along – the steps are nearly identical.

To start the process of enabling uTorrent to allow connections from remote computers, open it up and select Options and then Preferences…

From the column on the left side of the window, click the “plus sign” ( + ) next to Advanced to expand that menu. Then select Web UI from that same menu.

In the Web UI section, place a check in the box next to Enable Web UI in order to turn it on. Then enter a user name and password in the spaces provided in the Authentication section – any username and password will do.

Now select Connection from the column on the left side of the window.

Make note of the port number in the Port used for incoming connections: box. You don’t need to change it, just remember it. As illustrated in the screenshot below, the port I’m using is 1234.

Open a web browser on the same computer that you’re running uTorrent on. In the Address field, enter the following web address:

http://127.0.0.1:PORT_NUMBER/gui/

where “PORT_NUMBER” is the number you made note of in the previous step (#5).

You’ll be prompted to enter the username and password you set back in step #3.

Ta-da! There’s uTorrent, but within a browser.

Now head over to another computer or device with a browser (desktop/laptop, your phone, tablet, web connected TV etc). This time, enter the IP address of the computer running uTorrent in place of 127.0.0.1. If you aren’t sure of the IP address that computer is using, we’ve got you covered. Here’s how to determine your IP address in Windows 10 or earlier versions of Windows.

Once again you’ll be prompted to enter your username and password, and uTorrent will be displayed within that browser window. Click the Add Torrent button from the upper-left corner of the “web based” version of uTorrent.

Choose a .torrent file to load into uTorrent.

And now uTorrent will begin downloading to the computer running the uTorrent app – but you can control it from your other device.

That’s it! Now you can control uTorrent from a remote device!

This tutorial will take you step by step through setting up and using uTorrent to download files using bittorrent in Windows.

First up, download uTorrent for Windows (the link will open the uTorrent download page and the file will begin to download automatically). Double-click the installer file from your Downloads folder when the download has completed.

Click the Next button to begin the installation.

Click the Next button on the ‘warning’ screen.

Review the EULA and then click the Agree button.

This step is important – unless you’re absolutely sure you want to give it a try – make sure to remove the check mark from the box labelled Install McAfee WebAdvisor before you click the Next button. You do not need to install WebAdvisor in order to use uTorrent.

Decide where or if you’d like to have uTorrent create shortcuts and icons and then click the Next button.

Take a look at the Additional Settings and make your selections accordingly. One you may want to strongly consider – you probably do not need uTorrent to start every time Windows boots up – so remove the check mark from the box labelled Start uTorrent when Windows starts up before you click the Next button.

Finally, click the Finish button to completely the installation.

When uTorrent starts, before you jump in and start using it – consider hiding the “sidebar”. It isn’t particularly useful and clutters the app up a bit. Click the Options item from the main menu and then remove the check next to Show Sidebar

The main uTorrent window will now be displayed.

Now find yourself a torrent to download, if you don’t have one ready to go. I’m a fan of eTree – it’s a site filled with torrents of live concerts from bands that allow audience members to tape and trade recordings.

Once you’ve downloaded a .torrent file, click the Add Torrent button in uTorrent (see screenshot below) or click File and then Add Torrent…

Navigate to the .torrent file on your hard drive, select it and then click the Open button.

uTorrent will open a new window that displays all of the files that will be downloaded as a part of the .torrent. The default location to save this files is your Downloads folder, but can be changed by clicking the … (3 dots) button in the Save in section. Click OK when you’re ready to start downloading the files.

After a moment or two, the transfers will start.

You can monitor the progress of your downloads by looking at the Status, Down Speed and ETA fields. The Status shows the percentage of the files that have completed downloading, the Down Speed displays the speed at which the files are downloading, and the ETA is the amount of time uTorrent expects the download to take.

The Status of that torrent will also switch to Seeding – which means you’re now sharing those files with other people. It’s generally considered good netiquette to seed those files for a while – bittorrent relies on it. The amount of time you opt to seed those files is entirely up to you.

When prompted, click Yes to confirm you want to stop seeding the files and remove the torrent from uTorrent. Now you’re able to use uTorrent to download files using bittorrent!
