How to Stop Windows Vista from Highlighting Newly Installed Apps

This brief tutorial will show you how to stop Windows Vista from highlighting new entries in your Start menu.

One common complain about the Windows Start menu is that by default, new programs are highlighted in yellow after installation. To stop this behavior just follow the few steps outlined below.

  1. Right-click any blank/unused area of the Taskbar and select Properties

  2. click to enlarge

  3. Select the Start Menu tab from the top, and then click the Customize… button.
  4. Scroll down until you find the entry Highlight newly installed programs. Remove the check from the box in front of that entry.
  5. Click OK to return to the Start Menu screen. There, click the Apply button and then click OK to close that window. From now on, newly installed programs will not be highlighted. That’s it!
