How to play any video file in Windows

Windows

The CCCP (or Combined Community Codec Pack) is set of video codecs and players designed to play almost any type of video file, and with a few more downloads discussed later, it will play everything you can throw at it. You can download the CCCP from here. After you’ve downloaded it, double click the file and begin the installation.

The initial screen should be similar to the one below.

Keep clicking Next until you get to this. I recommend changing Full Installation to what is shown below, as I’ll just be using the Media Player Classic player for this article. You can try the other player if you want, but I have found MPC to be much better.

Continue until you get to this. I recommend enabling thumbnails.

Keep clicking Next until you get to the final screen. Make sure both items are checked, and click Finish.

The FFDshow settings should pop up (see screenshot below). Leave them set to the default settings, click Next, and then click Apply.

After you are done with the installation, there should be a Combined Community Codec entry in your All Programs list from the Start Menu. Go into the Players and click Media Player Classic Home Cinema.

Media Player Classic Home Cinema will open. Click on View -> Options, or just press O on your keyboard.

Click on Formats and you should see something similar to below. I recommend clicking All or Video. All will make Audio and Video files play in MPC classic by default. Video will just make videos play there. I also recommend checking all the entries under Autoplay.

Now you’re ready to play some videos! You can check out the other options if you want, but I won’t be going over them right now. Most are pretty self explanatory.

Now to make even more videos work! For this, you’ll just need to download and install the Quicktime Alternative and Real Alternative. The installations are easy to follow, just make sure you have your web browser closed before installing (so that Quicktime and Real videos will play fine in your browser).

It’s also a good idea to keep a copy of VLC around to play incomplete or corrupt video files and to watch video streams. VLC is also cross platform, and will play the majority of videos.

Up next, I’ll show you how to work some magic with CCCP to make all your videos look better!
