How to give VLC a different set of icons (OS X)

This very brief tutorial will show you how to change the VLC icon set from the pylon to a sleek black “play” button.

Please note: This guide was published back in 2008 and is now considered out of date, unless you’re using the same (older) software – this will not work in modern versions of VLC for macOS. Also, the site that hosted the icon files is now gone. With all of that said, if you are using an old version of VLC on an old version of OS X, Flader 2 is a pretty cool looking icon pack for VLC.

  1. Head over to site is gone and download the VLC Makeover Kit
  2. Open the DMG file and double click Icon Resources
  3. contents of the vlc makeover kit dmg file

  4. You’ll be presented with a large list of files
  5. list of files in the vlc makeover kit

  6. Open another Finder window and navigate to VLC. Right-click (ctrl-click for single-button mouse folks) and select Show Package Contents
  7. show vlc package contents

  8. Navigate to Contents/Resources.
  9. vlc package contents

  10. Back in the open dmg window (the window in Step #3) select all of the files, copy them, and then paste them into the Resources folder. You’ll be asked if you’re sure you want to do that – place a check in the Apply to all button and then click Replace.
  11. replace all files dialog box

  12. And now VLC will have a shiny new (and improved) icon set!
  13. new vlc icon set
