How to Create Folders on Your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch

This very brief tutorial will guide you through the steps required to create folders to help organize the Apps on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

  1. Folders are created when you drag-and-drop one App onto another on one of your Home screens. Locate an App you want to put in a folder then tap it and hold your finger down.
  2. an iOS Home screen with 3 Apps

  3. Select Edit Home Screen from the list of options.
  4. the context menu for an App on an iPhone

  5. Now tap your finger on the App again and hold your finger down again – but this time, slide that App on top of another one.
  6. dragging an iPhone App icon onto another iPhone App icon

  7. Let go of your finger when the two Apps are ‘on top’ of each other.
  8. two iPhone App icons on top of each other to create new folders

  9. That will create a folder, name it (Apple assigns a name it thinks might be appropriate based on the Apps in the folder) and put those two Apps into it. If you don’t want to use the default name, tap it.
  10. a newly created folder on an iPhone Home screen

  11. Use the on-screen keyboard to give your folder a name.
  12. create folders and then rename them on an iPhone or iPad

  13. Repeat the first two steps to keep adding Apps to the folder.
  14. adding multiple iPhone Apps to a Home screen folder

  15. That’s it!
  16. a folder on the iOS Home screen with 3 Apps in it

If you ever need to rename your folder, that’s just as easy.
