How to Print from your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch

This guide explains how to print from your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch – without having to install any Apps or special software on your device.

Way back when this tutorial was initially published (2010!) it was considerably more complicated to print from your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. Fast forward to 2021 and pretty much all printers support AirPrint, the method Apple devices use to print. If you aren’t sure if your printer supports it, Apple keeps a well maintained and up to date list of printers that support AirPrint.

Here are the steps for how to print from two of the most commonly used Apps for printing – Notes and Mail.

  1. Open the note you want to print and then select the “circle with 3 dots in it” icon in the upper-right corner of the App (see screenshot below).
  2. an arrow pointing to the 3-dots icon in the Notes App for iOS and iPadOS

  3. Tap Send a Copy from the list of options.

  5. Choose Print from this list of options.

  7. In the Printer Options panel, tap the Select Printer line.

  9. Choose the printer you want to use to print your note by tapping it once.

  11. If you want to print more than one copy, use the “plus sign” button ( + ) to increase the number of copies. If you want to print the document in black and white, toggle the Black & White switch to ON. When you’re ready, tap Print

  13. A small notification window will appear on your device letting you know the status of the print job. That’s it, you’re done!

  15. Printing an email from the Mail App on an iPhone or iPad isn’t particularly hard, but figuring out how to do it the first time can be a bit frustrating. Open the email you want to print and then tap the Share icon – the one that looks like it should be called “reply” – it’s an arrow with a curl at the end.

  17. When the list of options appears, swipe up on the list itself to scroll through it.

  19. The very last item on that list is Print – select it.

  23. Choose the printer you want to use to print your email by tapping it once.

  27. That’s it! Head over to your printer and pick up your newly printed email :)
