How to Stop Files From Grouping Together in Windows

This short guide will show you how to “ungroup” files in Windows Explorer and keep them seperate.

Do files group themselves together in one or more of your folders in Windows Explorer? Would you like to stop that behavior? Here’s how –

  1. Open one of the folders where it happens. Click View from the main menu.
  2. In the View toolbar click the Group by drop-down menu and select (None) from the list of options.
  3. Now all of the files and folders will ungroup themselves. If you want to keep this view for all of your other folders, select Options from the View menu and then Change folder and search options from the drop-down menu.
  4. Select the View tab and then click the Apply to Folders button. This will reset the view for all of your other folders to be the same as the current one.
  5. All done!
